Do you recommend the active tank or the passive tank for small gang work? They both look like good fits, just want to know what you ended up liking better?

Depending on how small, the dual xlasb fit hands down

finally lost mine, not due to neuts or ewar or anything, but an overwhelming force and enough webs to stop me from closing to gate before my boosters ran out.

Out of curiosity, do you prefer the 8-gun, or 7+nos setup better?

I died in the 8 gun fit, my next one will probably be 7+nos

If you're running 3x MFS, then I'd say 7+Nos is ideal.
However, if you're set on 8 guns, I'd run 2x MFS + PDU & Discharge Elutriation rig.
