And that my friend is why remain lost, they thought that anyone who wanted to leave the EU was stupid (no doubt many were but so were many remainers) so - rather than outlining all the benefits of EU membership which were supposedly self-evident - they dismissed the leavers as trash and then lost, and lost, and lost.

Listen to what Mark Blyth says about Brexit: he also assumed that remain would win but then he saw a meeting at the Nissan Plant where the workers were openly hostile to management arguing for remain. At one point the Nissan exec in exasperation said "don't you care about our GDP?" and a worker in crowd shouted back "we don't care about YOUR GDP".

At that point Mark Blyth realized that leave would win.

It's the Neo-liberal trap where the people benefiting from globalization don't understand that many are instead worse off.

Atm my hedged bet is 50/50 that the UK will rejoin the EU within 20 years or that the EU will have lost more members in 20 years.
Yup. Skipping the "hey, this is why it's actually really good for you" and also, you know, actually sharing those benefits with the people you want to support the system to go just go "you're fucking stupid for wanting to end this thing" does not work.

But that's the issue with trying to undo years of scape-goating Europe for what where largely domestic failures.

Re: systems for big votes. I like the Australian referendum system. The double majority (of voters and of the states) means that you need to build real broad based support for an idea before it'll get up.

Also, see Howard's master work in scuppering the Republic referendum for its weaknesses.

"might" is a police word, because police don't make decisions on who is guilty and who is innocent. The courts do.
Im sorry if the BBC is not a viable source for you. If you wanted me to explain in more detail what a link is you should have said.

They rightly don't make the decisions yet somehow you seem to think you do have the right. I guess you are a great believer in guilty before proven innocent since you have already condemned Cummings in the trial of public opinion.

You must be really pleased with all those dead people, you were probably hoping for it just so you could complain about the Tories some more. Please die Grandpapa so I can peddle socialist shit.

    At any rate
    59,537 more deaths than usual
is not just due to coronavirus directly.

But since we are comparing countries again perhaps you would like to say which one has the highest death rate? It stands to reason [not that you will get much here] that countries with a higher population, different political systems [that don't hide data] and demographics like a higher elderly population, number of immigrants bussed in by socialists etc will vary the number of deaths in countries.

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I thought everyone knew what they were voting for

'They betrayed us and lied to us' - Lincolnshire farmer blasts Conservative government after vote

An award-winning Lincolnshire farmer says he feels betrayed by the Conservative government after it failed to include legal protection for UK agriculture in any future trade deals with third world countries.

Andrew Ward, who farms 1,600 acres of land in Leadenham and who was awarded an MBE for his services to agriculture in 2014, was one of 2,000 farmers who wrote to MP’s asking them to uphold British agriculture's high standards in any future trade deals that the UK makes with third countries.

Their fear is that food would be sold here that was produced using lower safety standards – which would negatively effect the industry in this country.

He added that some MP’s told farmers they wouldn’t be prepared to vote in favour of this in Parliamant, which they had “no problem” with.

Mr Wards says others who made “false promises”, however, and have now lost his vote.

“They betrayed us and lied to us,” he continued.

“They told us they’d do it because they wanted our support but when the time came they didn’t do it.

“This is going to affect how I vote from now on – in local elections and everything. I won’t forget about this.

“We are just not getting the support from the government we need.”

Brigg and Poole MP Andrew Percy attracted criticism after reportedly telling one Lincolnshire farmer he had “no particular reason” why he didn’t vote in relation to the matter, Farming UK reports.

Mr Ward added the decision has compounded what is already a “horrific” time for the farming community, with the profession having to deal with coronavirus, changes to the industry due to Brexit, the recent floods and a drought.

He added that the ‘three crop rule’, which stipulates three crops farmers must grow in order to access a single farm payment, has been almost impossible to deliver for many due to the adverse weather and not being able to put crops in the ground. He says this rule was only abolished for this year when the planting of crops was already taking place, at the eleventh hour.

“Farming always seems to get the blame for everything and we are the ones putting food on the table,” Mr Ward added.

“When we grow a crop we have to adhere to so many regulations and environmental measures.

“And the government wouldn’t put in a measure which made sure any products that came in from overseas has to match or be better than what we do.”

Mr Ward told Lincolnshire Live the amount of rapeseed being grown in this country has fallen dramatically in the last few years and that he personally lost 30,000 in failed crops as a result of the government's policies.

Farmers grow rapeseed as there is a demand for it and it is a lot better for you than olive oil, according to Mr Ward, whose farm is one of two with McDonald’s Flagship status and provides rapeseed oil for the fast food chain to use in its restaurants.

He says rapeseed oil coming into the country is grown using substances not allowed to be used in Britain, which is why a lot of farmers like him feel they are being mistreated.
The government is also set to change single farm payments, which are made to any farmers who own over five hectares of agricultural land.

This may mean some farmers are given less money starting next year and some farmers, such as Mr Ward, would like to see a delay in the changes given what has happened to the industry so far this year.
Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves for slaughter.

Argued with my dad the other day on a very similar point re: fishermen. He retired in a small fishing village and not unnaturally, he sympathises with them. Also swallowed hook line and sinker the tory brexit propaganda grr spanish fshermen, etc..

My face when I'm explaining to him that relying on tories to protect the interests of the northern working class might not be the best scheme ever, oh hey there's a mining village 6 miles down the road let's jump on the 2 services a day bus and go ask how it worked out for them.

He claims to believe that the fisherman wont be sold out the second it makes Johnson's new girlfriend a quid.
