For general information my mobo setup is i7 3820, 4x4gb hyperx on top of x79-ud3. I am confident it will carry me into the next decade and then a bit more despite it already being ancient.

For now, after some digging, Iiyamas look nice. I have one at work and it's okay.
Honestly 144 is quite a difference. If you have the card to push it steadily, sync monitors are good for perceived quality, imo.
    meh

So you all you all day is youtube and discord? Makes sense.

(Seriously though running windows at 144Hz is pretty neat.. Like you can tell when you move the mouse)

Erich says it's better to have both screens 144, my bank balance says 30hz will be more than enough for the secondary

30 is pretty terrible.. (but yeah you dont need both to be 144, all the video cards can handle them being of different refresh rates)

Grab a 21:9 IPS from LG, they have models for all wallet sizes. I have one and I couldn't be happier.

I am in the market for a new monitor, but I'm having a really hard time finding what I want. And shopping sites lack the ability to sort by HDR. My criteria are:

    24" screen or larger
    IPS
response time of 5ms or less
refresh rate over 60 Hz (75 is fine, 120 would be awesome)
    a proper HDR implementation
    Freesync 2
    costs under $400

    Am I being unreasonable?

Why do you want HDR? It seems completely useless tbh.

Depends on what you consider "proper HDR" I think. For me that would be DisplayHDR1000 with local dimming and near-complete color space coverage, and that is not in your price range.

Maybe take a look at the Acer ET322QK:

If you can and want to boost your budget, you could take a look at this:

I saw some HDR demos at Best Buy and I said to myself "I want that". That, and I don't like the backlight on my current display.

That's the thing: there doesn't seem to be a consistent standard used by the industry (outside of 4K displays). Some manufacturers are claiming a 1 million:1 contrast ratio is considered HDR, while operating in 8-bit. Others operate in 10-bit but have crap gamma.

I'd suggest starting with this list:

    https://displayhdr.org/certified-products/

DisplayHDR600 or better should at least have sort of suitable brightness levels.

    Then read reviews.

Ok, if it was a TV, I would be concerned regarding HDR. For a computer monitor that is going to be 24'' I would focus on a good quality panel that is good with colours (IPS, PVA, S-PVA, etc) and with a really good refresh rate (144Hz). Throwing HDR in there with the requirements will only raise the price.

If you decide to look at 1440p, I put above a recommendation for a 27'' (which is arguably more desirable than 24''), but it banjaxes your budget.

Hope you find what you're looking for ^^

I think I found what I'm looking for: the LG 29WK600-W.

75Hz, FreeSync, HDR, 99% sRGB color space, multiple digital inputs. VESA mountable to boot! And it's only $200!

The only possible hitch is this looks like a matte coating. I'm used to glossy coatings. But I will check it out in person tomorrow.

You are literally the first nerd to complain about matte coating. Glossy coatings are complete shit tbqfh. Every light source in the room becomes a reflection, glhf having a backlit keyboard.

Sounds like a good value display. Matte should be fine even for glossyheads given that the display should have a reasonable contrast ratio. Change your wallpaper if you can't live without seeing your beautiful beautiful reflection.

Posting from my new display, the LG 29WK600-W.

Yes, it is a matte finish, but I think I'll grow to like it. The color gamut improvement alone is impressive, and side-by-side applications look great. Haven't tried any HDR content yet, but that will come eventually.

My dad is jealous, but he's getting my old display, which will be an improvement.

FreeSync is amazeballs. Everything is so crisp and responsive.

      Spoiler:

DX:MD in ultrawide at 70fps? Yes, please!
