Amazingly the reasonable compromise is to license firearms the same way we license motor vehicles (In the US).
Want a single shot black powder musket on standby for 'home defense'? That's like a bicycle, even eight year olds can learn to use them.
Want a shotgun for bird hunting/home defense? "You can get a 'motor vehicle license' just like everyone else that drives a car. (There are some that argue Hunter's Safety Training already accomplishes this, but there is no ongoing training/etc)
Want instead a handgun? That's akin to a motorcycle certification on top of your standard licensxe.
Want an AR-15/MP5/P90? Yeah, you know how some folks complain about D.O.T. training/certification for commercial licenses/endoresements? XD
