Gun Laws and Gun Rights Discussion

The old Thread has now been locked down. Not sure why the existing thread got locked down, but there is no chance we're going to go without a thread to discuss the ongoing gun violence problem in the United States.

So this is now the new (primarily U.S.) Gun Violence, Law and Public Policy Thread (tm).

Lets keep it civil and on-topic, and focus on the issues and facts and not the posters or insults. Maybe we can keep this one from getting locked down.

Let's just get the leftist position out front-and-center on the first page.

Where the formation of this militia cannot be prevented, the workers must try to organize themselves independently as a proletarian guard, with elected leaders and with their own elected general staff; they must try to place themselves not under the orders of the state authority but of the revolutionary local councils set up by the workers. Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary. The destruction of the bourgeois democrats’ influence over the workers, and the enforcement of conditions which will compromise the rule of bourgeois democracy, which is for the moment inevitable, and make it as difficult as possible – these are the main points which the proletariat and therefore the League must keep in mind during and after the approaching uprising.
Nay to assault weapons ban or repeal of the second amendment.

Yay to requiring membership in a democratically organized and regulated militia.

People often go on about the whole militia requirement and it is actually already well defined, in the Militia Act of 1792 and amended in 1862 (to allow African Americans to serve in militias) and then in 1903 which repealed the 1792 act, and formalized the federal terms of Militia and established the national guard, further amended in 1916, 1920, and 1933 which established various things like the ROTC, The Army Reserve Corps, and other things like procurement & procedures.

The important thing of note, is that the 1903 act provides the legal definition of militia that is still in use to this day; Organized Militias defined as those which receive federal support such as the national guard and army reserve. And unorganized militias defined as every able bodied man between the ages of 17-45.

tbh I'm personally totally conflicted on this issue

i find guns cool and would love to be able to have one for target shooting, hunting or in the WORST CASE SCENARIO which I think is unlikely to ever happen, self defense

on the other hand, giving everyone access to guns is a surefire way to just fucking wreck civilization as we know it

how to regulate that only the "good guys" have guns is a problem i cannot think any realistic solution for

the current situation in the US is the result of having a policy that is oriented towards everyone having guns and anybody sane can see how that's working out
I was somewhere around Old Man Star, on the edge of Essence, when drugs began to take hold.

What makes you think only "good guys" have guns in the USA (not including criminals). You have to have some really serious issues to not get a gun in yank land. Like being really bad (no criminal).

Having a liberal gun policy isn't the problem. Treating gun ownership as a right is. It shouldn't be a right but a privilege. If you want a gun you have to prove that you are a capable individual that is genuinely interested in owning a firearm for a legitimate purpose, either for hunting or sporting activities and store it securely.

There's nothing wrong with allowing people access to guns, but handing them out like candy with little to no oversight is plain retarded.

it is a bit baffling that you have to jump through hoops to say, get a drivers license and then have insurance blah blah but can just buy a gun
