    Doki-Doki Literature Club

This game is not suitable for children or those who are easily disturbed. Those who suffer from anxiety or depression should exercise care before playing. Play at your own risk.

Also avoid spoilers. The writing is excellent and deals with the relevant themes and issues better than any other fictional work I've ever seen, but does somewhat depend on surprise and plot twists for full effect.

In some cases, you may want to delete your save data to start the game completely over. To do this, navigate to the game folder and delete the file named firstrun. The next time you start the game, you will be asked to delete your save data. Select Yes, delete my existing data. The game will then start from the beginning.

      Spoiler:

Seriously, stop reading this and go play first.

In 2015 I hung myself. Came ridiculously close to death, but escaped without brain damage. This game helped me experience what it must have been like for my friends and family, and honestly eased my latent depression. But some people (most) report the opposite experience, it can be traumatizing. The depictions of mental illness are spot on, and the depressed character is very easy for me to identify with.

The only weeby thing is the art style, the developer lives in the USA and the game is supposed to lampshade the stuff he didn't like about anime

Yeah it plays really well with people's expectations.

It might be "just" a visual novel in style but the way it times things and the subtle shifts in tone, music, background, down to the timing and structure of the text are all used to great effect imo. It tends to manage to hit even if you're expecting something and all.

Yeah, the fact that it works even if you know there's a twist is a big part of what makes it good. It's also a big part of what made it gain popularity so fast - it's actually possible to recommend it to people. It still helps to avoid spoilers, but it's not utterly ruined by them.
