    got it down to 500 already had contracted more things than a sailor on liberty.

    My book is nearly done too 22.5 chapters of 25 and its 63k words on 239 pages so far

    I can't see why they would be a problem, aren't they a common convention? Wouldn't they be fine to use in a scholarly paper?

    Depends on the uni, the UK ones for example are uber anal regarding proper academic writing even in school papers. They can and will carve out points on your exams if you use contractions.
