They probably spend half of that playing games instead of developing them

    That's normal for the industry.

    You didn't know that?
    What a bunch of mugs.
It's an extremely sought after posting by people with no experience of the working world who enjoy videogames, so they can't even unionize because they get kicked out and replaced by a new wave of millenials wanting to make the next Last of Us

Eugene Systems developers went on strike for 3 months, totalling 22 devs out off a company of 41, management just got a bunch of interns and stonewalled the strikers till they had to come back to work

I have trouble getting into a game after 8 hours of staring at a screen at work, I can't imagine having any drive for games after 70 hour weeks

Game development is one of the most depressing jobs that's still bound to a modern office.
Shit pay/benefits, near-permanent "crunch-hours" and you're entirely disposable. There are exceptions of course, but the vast majority of game studios just chew through newbies like they're going out of fashion, spitting out the remains before moving onto the next, all in a furious rush to avoid being shut down themselves by whatever publisher they've got in hock to.

If you like playing games, the best thing you can do is get a decent job elsewhere with a sensible work/life balance and just play them when you're not at work.

It can be a better enviroment at smaller indie devs but they still work insane hours

Also it seems like you need to blow someone to get into the cool stuff.

Most gamedev jobs arent id or Creative Assembly. If you have no connections, you'll probably end up at the studio making the next Warrock.

That seems like a good way to have a drinking problem

This is the biggest issue. They cant fix the problems because there are too many people trying to get in to the job because they cant see the problems. No sane person would agree to work under the conditions they have, but they dont know it going in and dont care because "I get to make games for a living!!!". A few years of being kicked around by company after company and they soon change their minds and then all of a sudden they are the ones trying to make a change while the new kids are jumping in with stars in their eyes..

This is why a LOT of 'old timer' game devs go independent. You get a lot more control of what you are doing back, and you arent being forced to work 80 or 120 hour weeks, you are doing it because you genuinely love what you are trying to create.

I know I would rather work an 80 hour week on something I loved than a 40 hour week on something I dont give a shit about.

The CGI industry is pretty much the same bag of dicks, with the added benefit of being utterly dick fucked by Hollywood Accounting. So happy I was talked out of going either path.

I'm still depressed over how easy it was for the alt-right to infiltrate gaming culture

Because making good games has always stopped studios getting eaten up and killed off.

He probably met women other than his mother or sister. Had you not lived under a rock you would know that women can be complete morons and idiots in management positions as good if not better as men.

I'm ok with morons in management - after all it's basically their job to not understand production. I don't like morons with ~~~vision~~ in management.
