Are people seriously saying that windmills are killing birds?
They arent dumb as rocks. If they were they would keep crashing in to each other and trees and pretty much everything.
Wind turbines arent effective because they arent a reliable source of power. You can figure out for yourself why

Also can we stop derailing thread and keep talking how bad Tesla is and how ugly other electric cars are

You say that, but I've never heard of a rock committing suicide by slamming itself into a window.

Smaller windmills have killed tons of larger birds like Eagles and such.
    They got quite high RPM.

This was solved by painting some high contrast lines across the blades.

AFAIK it's not a good idea to place windmills near known breeding grounds of birds, as they come back to the same place and there is a higher risk of flying into them in masses.

But I have no idea how close "near" is, or how to define "breeding ground".

The point was probably that a well placed mill does not interfere much with birds.

Birds fly into wind turbines for the same reason they fly into glass windows - they can't see them.

Watching a flock of Cockatoos being blended by a wind turbine is a guilty pleasure though.

    I beg to disagree.

Most of the answers to his initial posting actually make his point. "Technology must be cost effective ...", "It takes time ..."

Fuck, no! You can't "make deals" with nature. You adapt quickly (in our case) or die. And we do not only not adapt (fast enough), we even turn back already implemented legislation.

Yes, it is - I used to live quite near to a plant operating on that principle.

There's also a related idea under development involving building big hollow spheres under the sea or at the bottom of deep lakes and letting water flow into the sphere to generate electricity/pumping it out to store energy - they've been testing it in the Bodensee: http://forschung-energiespeicher.inf..._unter_Wasser/

Have you ever heard the expression "bird-brained"

You should have, it's probably been used to describe you.

I'm not defending Smarnca. I am merely reminding you that you are in no position on this forum to call people names.

Wind turbines do tend to kill birds. But so do fossil fuel burning power plants, and probably in greater numbers. It's just hard to tell since there isn't a real control group available.

Some birds are smart. I've met birds that are probably smarter than a few of the people on this forum. Some birds are pretty damn stupid. Thinking they're all the same is a bit like thinking all mammals are the same. Also their vision systems are rather different from ours, and again vary wildly across species.
