After some people spend a few years in jail and learn the consequences of sedition, yes, government should sit down and talk with them.

Sadly, Rajoy is a muppet and he is gonna fuck it up again...

Does anyone actually think calling for independence following a referendum is legitimately something that deserves years in prison in a liberal democracy?

As I understand it Catalonia is not so much of being independent in the sense of "i wanna outta here and be my own country", but more like "hey mother Spain, we need to talk about wealth redistribution (away from us) and cultural identiy, could we do this pretty please?"

Spain's answer to that was always "No!", with the exception of Zapateo (sp?), who had negotiated something - ready to sign, which then got canned by the current administration.

Sir, are you implying Spain isn't quite the liberal democracy it claims to be?

Meanwhile, those big companies "moving out of Catalonia" aren't just lifting off into the sky and leaving swaths of ruined pavement behind: they're just re-registering in Madrid so that if Catalonia absconds the prickly bosom of Mother Spain they get to stay in the Euro. Avoiding/minimizing any disruption, looking out for #1 (shareholders).

It would be the same in Germany. Endangering the geographic and constitutional integrity of Germany is high treason.

    Tapapapatalk

Edit: calling for it isn't high treason, preparing to do so and doing so is. So the Bavarian Party having Bavarian independence as their goal isn't an issue, having a referendum on independence is.

Spain asks Catalonia: Did you declare independence or not?

MADRID — Spain’s prime minister on Wednesday asked the head of the secession-minded Catalonia region the question that no one can seem to answer: Did he declare independence or not?
The query reflected more than just confusion. Clarity on Catalonia’s position is critical for Spain to map out its next move — including possible harsh measures against Catalonia if it proclaims itself a sovereign nation

He didn't have the balls to declare it. He just said the process is to be "suspended".

Waste of time, money and people's patience.
