Post [TMA] [Poll] Expatting to Singapore

I've been told by my boss to start thinking on if I want to relocate to Singapore for minimum two years beginning in Summer 2018 so ending in Summer 2020, so naturally I go to the source of wisdom in the world: FHC. I want to hear whatever people have to share on that part of the world.

    Background:
I'm 32 and work as a manager at one of the larger Swedish multinationals based in Stockholm, and I've lived here for the last 6 years. I really like my apartment (20 min walk to the office), I like my job and I have all my friends here. Currently single again after my gf broke up with me a month ago. Simply put, my life is pretty damn good actually, slight downturn due to being dumped though.

    Pros:
    Massive massive career opportunity
Quite likely increased pay and lower taxes
    Escape from the Swedish climate
Close to a bunch of cool places to travel to

    Cons:
Will be leaving friends and family
Parents will give me shit and be quite upset
Zero social network for a time (Extensive expat community however)
Climate is hot and humid = boiled Swede
Will leave arguably one of the best countries/cities in the world

    Thoughts:
I honestly thought I would've "progressed further" in my life re: relationships/family by this time, and however silly that feeling is it's still there. I'm afraid that going to Singapore would put everything on pause until I'm 35 - which also is a silly feeling since I could very well meet my future wife there. Unlikely to be an Asian though, they're just not my type.

Then again this is an opportunity that very few in my field of work get and for one of the better companies around, so strictly career wise it's a no-brainer.

Have until January 1 probably to decide, and nothing is final yet in terms of the company actually agreeing with my boss to a relocation. That said I want to have thought things through properly.

So what do you all think? Thoughts? Input? Insults?
    Real men pvp in barges.

I have no idea on the subject since I'm not very informed about the conditions you will be contending with on a daily basis living down there except I hear it is very expensive? More so than Sweden. But it's only for two years? Why not? See another place of the world, meet new people. I would jump on such an opportunity tbh. Two years is nothing.

Make sure you run the numbers regarding cost of living increase etc, and then tack on another 10% increase just for good measure. You are giving up a lot by leaving home and whatnot, make sure your compensation reflects this.

Yeah I'm 99% sure the compensation will increased more than just the col increase.

Do research on cost of living (and living good!) and make sure you ask for at least 30% more. Be ashamed of the number but keep a straight face. Then its just negotiation.

It's quite a nice city, but unfortunately very polluted due to its neighbours burning palm oil. It also has armies of people in service industries everywhere doing trivial jobs just so they can have full employment, which is a bit weird but I guess you would get used to it.

The palm oil burning pollution is seasonal.

Expat community in Singapore is big. I've got mates over there at the moment and they're loving it.

Worst case: it's only 2 years and you hate it and spend all your time working / nerding on / touring SE Asia.

Just saw this thread. As opposed to women, men tend to improve with age (not deteriorating etc ). 35 isn't a bad point to be looking at your family/relationship status, and going abroad to work (with the career boost that it entails) isn't a bad way of expanding your horizons (and maybe meet somebody, why not). If that doesn't work, you will always have the work to pad your CV with (and the stories from Singapore I'd assume aren't so bad to pour over beers and what not).

I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Welcome to Hypercapitalist Syndicate Caldari Prime

(Wouldn't bother unless the salary is outright obscene. Singapur is hella expensive and has a bit of a caste system. Everything relies on cheap SE asian "slave" labour. And their laws are pretty fucked up)

I would take a small holiday there first, two years is a long time in a place you can't stand

Loads of late 20s, early 30s single expats in Singapore, you may well meet someone out there!

IF your spoken english is anything like as good as your written english, and you are pretty gregarious by Swedish standards, do it in a heartbeat.

I dont know anyone who regretted a move like this, and I know loads who have done it.

You need to enjoy drinking / group socialising though.
