Having few chronic illnesses I have met many students along the way, so far I have never said no if I have been asked about a student being present or trying to do something, like take eye measurements

i had a similar experience when i got my sleep apnoea diagnosis. the doc had explicitly called in a bunch of med students because my blood oxygen levels were so low when sleeping that my airways ought to be severely contracted and thus a good teaching case.

it was... weird to have 8 people standing over you talking medical woo while staring at a tiny screen, but they were clearly into what was going on and it wasn't too uncomfortable having a camera rammed up your nose...

i lie, it was uncomfortable, not the most uncomfortable i've ever experienced, but imagine a COVID nasal swap, 10 times worse.
yeah i absolutely mashed my hand and did nothing about it for a week, so i imagine it was a 'look how stupid people can be' course for the students

Anything that isn't yet another elderly chain smoker with COPD/stroke/heart disease is going to be interesting on many wards.
Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves for slaughter.

:3 i always say up front 'happy to have students involved if any on placement'. First it means the clinician will be more thorough and do things by the book, second they have to learn somehow and winding up students takes your mind off things.

My mum used to be an administrator for the NHS.

A guy came in with scurvy and they brought all the students in the hospital to see him, I'm not sure if they even asked him.

The mantra was basically "you will probably never see this again".

they would probably have asked him once ("Do you mind if a student attends as well?"), and used that as blanket consent for any student for the entire stay

I almost want to go find a flat earther group and see what they think of all these images. Almost.

But yeah, damn that was a big bada-boom right there! Amazingly no one is reported killed(?) from it.
And while it wasnt as instant as it looks on the video the fact that it went boom and then the darkness came is pretty good nightmare fuel.

I heard a report this morning that at least one person got killed, IIRC a lady that tried to rescue animals from her/a pet shelter. But there's also no communication possible with one of the islands, cell phones and internet apparently not working there, which makes me sadly expect more casualities.

    [Added]
In a statement, the government confirmed three deaths: two locals and a British national.

It said some of the smaller outlying islands were particularly badly affected, with all the houses destroyed on one and just two left on another.

Communications with the island chain have been disrupted after the single underwater cable connecting Tonga to the rest of the world was severed in the eruption.

(Aerial images show Tonga cloaked in volcanic ash)

Sadly, that was to be expected. Looking at that picture above, there's more to come, I fear. That isn't even one of the islands mentioned.

Hmm, it's almost like capitalism is wholly incapable of providing an answer to climate change beyond shallow PR campaigns and boondoggle marketing initiatives.

This is clearly a failure of regulation more than anything. Carbon offsetting from pre-existing forest, much less pre-existing AND PROTECTED forest, is laughable.

Temporary nature-based carbon removal can lower peak warming in a well-below 2 C scenario

(if done as a supplement to lowering emissions and not as the main approach)

It's not capitalism's role to regulate itself, that's the job of government. You can't honestly think selfish people who want to game the system for their benefit wont exist in literally whatever system there is?

Also their modelling, released in 2022, assumes we took them up on their recommendations in...2020? Looking at their (poor) graphs it seems that their model assumes that by 2022 Global net emissions have dropped something like 25% from their 2019 peak.

So what happens when capitalists run the government?

Some systems have built in mechanisms to limit the damage that can be done by a single psychopath. Some would call this democratic oversight, which capitalism abhors and corrupts at every opportunity.

What? Come on Keckers, you can do better. Tell us how what Putin is doing is capitalism's fault.
