If you've never been in one they are p nice. I mean, it's not a merc but more like a futuristic concept car that escaped the showroom and you are on the highway in. I'd buy one, but there's other cars I would buy first if I felt like spending 100k on a car, kind of thing.
It's a shuttle rather than a car. Virtually silent, can't tinker with it at all.

No that's been established in the lore. You can only do it on foot.

Couldn't they give them MREs? Probably cheaper as well.

this way, say Walmart don't have to register a loss of assets by destroying out-of-date, or near-out-of-date foodstuffs, instead they donated it to charity and get a healthy tax-kickback.

or, more likely somebody bought up old-near expired stock and pulled the above
    Viking, n.:
    1. Daring Scandinavian seafarers, explorers, adventurers, entrepreneurs world-famous for their aggressive, nautical import business, highly leveraged takeovers and blue eyes.
    2. Bloodthirsty sea pirates who ravaged northern Europe beginning in the 9th century.

Hagar's note: The first definition is much preferred; the second is used only by malcontents, the envious, and disgruntled owners of waterfront property.

MRE's are not particularly cheap. They do have amazing properties, in terms of shelf life, etc, but they aren't cheap.

I have 2 weeks for my wife and I, and potentially 4 other people, because earthquakes. They cost about $10 a meal.

they're cheap as dirt on the large scale (ie not you buying a dozen) - cost pennies for a gov on a massive scale.

As an aside I've also seen a claim that the box above cost the taxpayer $155 but can't offer any determination on the veracity of that.

They tend to inflate costs estimates but also as it is a government contract the cost data will be publicly available.

Conspicuously absent from the photo: anything that says FEMA. Haven't we learned our lesson to not rely on Twatter?

Quick investigation lends credence to the twatter stuff. However, FEMA states they are normally capable of providing up to 300,000 people fed for a day. FEMA has been working with a 1.2 million meal overage (that's approx 1.5 million people or 4.5 million meals a day of which they are designed to cover 900,000). Their most efficient provision of meals is not delivery of cases of food but the provision of something similar to homeless soup kitchens where they provide cooked meals there.

So the take away from this that I have is not disdain for FEMA but being impressed that the situation in Puerto Rico isn't worse.

edit: keep in mind that FEMA isn't the only agency there providing foods.
