i managed to get nginx to work, i will have another go at it tonight.
you know for a forum as small as this you really didn't need to fanny around with memcached etc just an out the box deb install of apache+php would have been fine
failing that though is vb actually using memcache its abit retarded if you don't configure it properly.

and theres no reason NOT to install xcache or APC because it will literally halve or more(less?) execution time for php scripts
even if load isnt a problem it'll make things more responsive and its just fucking 'apt-get install php5-xcache' BOOM DONE
but srsly i dont understand how you are having difficulty getting it working with lighty/nginx, the apt scripts should configure that for you
on a clean debian install you just apt-get install lighttpd and php5-cgi and php will be working vOv
