tl;dr if you don't want to watch because he has a kinda annoying voice: Ryzen 4000 coming along nicely tyvm, So far samples are showing ~100mhz peak clock increase which is OK I guess, but about an 8% IPC boost, which is kind pretty great

L3 cache is changing from 16Mb L3 per CCX to 32mb per chiplet (unless it's the other way around, I keep losing track of which is the component)

The L3 change has been reported elsewhere as well from a leaked* AMD video so that's probably true. I wonder if they'll manage to get the 4000 series compatible with current AM4 mobos, anyone read anything about that?

(I won't watch redgamingtech, other than the voice he's wholly unoriginal with no insights or interesting specualations of his own.)

They’ve stated they intend to keep mobo compatibility as long as possible.

As I understand it, they promised "through 2020" which to my mind clearly indicates the 4000s as they're releasing in 2020. 5000s will prolly be a new socket to take advantage of DDR5.

If this is correct, then AMD are IMO making the right call to stick with DDR4 for the next iteration. If it launches by the time for the 4000s appear, the performance delta will still be fairly small.

If I wanted to replace an Intel i7 4790k (on a Z97 board), would an AMD 3700X with an X570 board and 32GB 3200MHz RAM be the current default recommendation?

If the price delta isn't too severe, you may as well take advantage of the 570 and get faster RAM. Ryzen does like faster RAM, especially lower latency faster RAM. 3666 is the sweet spot.

Thank you. I have found faster RAM for about 10% more (or faster RAM with better latency for double the price) at the online shop I am using to price check at the moment.

    3666... but what latency?

Is an X570 board going to have features you want that a B450/B550/X470 board will not? Do you have a need for 32GB?

I sometimes run some algorithms on my private PC and the extra memory can be helpful for speeding things up (I also have 32GB in my current PC). If the only difference between chipsets in PCIe4 then I probably don't need fancy 570 - thanks for the tip.

It is the biggest difference on the spec sheet, but like Malcanis said the 570 chipset likes faster ram better. On 370/470 chipsets 3200 MHz is usually considered the sweet spot. However, the 10% price hike to get to 3666 like you said won't give you a 10% performance increase, and a 570 motherboard will also cost more than a 470 one, so it's a very subjective choice how much money you're willing to spend for a little bit of extra performance.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm a heart an upper mid-range type of person, so X470 should already be plenty for me.

I made a tentative list of parts to get, do any of you see anything wrong with the individual bits or their combination (I understand that I may need an older AMD CPU to flash the board BIOS):

    - Gigabyte X470 AORUS GAMING 7 WiFi or Gigabyte X470 AORUS GAMING 5 WiFi or ASUS X470 ROG CROSSHAIR VII HERO
    - AMD Ryzen™ 7 3700X
    - Corsair 163301 Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4 3200 MHz C16
    - Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black

I have checked that the memory is supported by the board and should fit underneath the cooler. Would cost roughly 700-750 depending on where I get the parts from, which I can easily afford.

As a proper degenerate, I indeed use wifi in my desktop and I do not lubricate my keyboard!
