Haha, yeah. If I ever picked up diving, I'd probably just get a cheap-ish waterproof compact camera.Originally Posted by Greme

Bags: a Tamrac backpack that fell into disuse after I got a thinktankphoto speeddaemon bag. Quality wise they are from another planet.

Nikon D3100 (was originally going to get a 550D, but airport price meant D3100 + 17-50 would be near the same price as 550D + kit lens)

Nikon 70-200 f2.8 (bought used, favourite lens)
Nikon 50mm f1.8 (looking forward to being able to AF it once I get some cash, but will be good learning to MF)

Is Canon powershot A3000 IS shit or not?
Need it for occasional drunk photos and shooting quality work stuff to be placed on a site in 1280x960.

Used a samsung before. never again.
Fuck (south) koreans.
At the price level, the.camera is hard to beat. But generally speaking Canon, NIKON and Sony are safe bets for point and shoots.

I use my camera on my HTC Desire HD because I can't be fucked to cart around a camera on the off chance of a decent photo opportunity.

So any recommendations for Macro lenses? Seen some for omgwtf amounts of money, but any decent ones around the £300 mark? The other alternative I guess is extension tubes attached to the 50mm lens. How do they compare to a proper lens?Originally Posted by Krugerrand
Also I'm basically self teaching myself all this shit slowly, but are there any good books out there? Got linked to a couple of sites but I struggle to sit and read stuff on a computer like that.
extension tubes will get you similar magnification to a proper macro
the difference is you will need multi-second exposures unless you have a VERY bright light source
you'll also lose AF and aperture control unless you buy expensive tubes, on canon (posibly nikon but dont know for sure) you can sploit to get a lens to stay at a different aperture with the aperture preview butan tho so not really a big deal there
basically extension tubes can be used for macro'ing stuff that doesnt move just fine but if you want to take macros of bugs and shit that moves you need a proper lens
a proper macro lens can also be used for taking non-macro pics, and has the advantage of proper AF
tubes are fun and so cheap that i'd recommend you start there anyway
