I'm not a girl, and I don't know what a "Mendolorian" is.. I think it might be a self healing car that travels through time.

as it is often one of the kit lenses given out with entry level dslrs, i would suggest you look into picking up one second hand quite cheaply. people upgrade or discover that a dslr is too much for them.

I'll need to pick up a v500 in a few weeks. I'm starting my project on documenting The Lough, a small lake and garden down here that people jog around, sit around, play sports around, etc. It's literally two minutes from the door of the place I'm moving into today, so I should be able to get down there at all hours.

I'm looking forward to it as I haven't got my 'tog on recently, and I need to get to grips with my F100.

I don't have any interest in the lense, just saw the deal and knew that a fair few FHC'ers are nerdy about photography so thought I'd share the info.

I think even DNG (Adobe open source raw image format) should offer lower file sizes.

EDIT: at obviously equal quality. Tiff is completely uncompressed (it supports compression, but rarely implemented) whereas dng does compression fairly well. Adobe offers the license free for everyone to use for anything image related. So far only Leica cameras do DNG as their only RAW file type of choice.

New camera, shoots like a dream. Hope the auto exposure isn't balls, I already know how to zone focus so hopefully I didn't fuck up too much with it. Developing my first two rolls from it tonight, wish me luck!

Oly Trips are dirt cheap and their meters should be still good.

    http://www.tripman.co.uk/

That is a site dedicated to the trip and also sells them refurbished with a guarantee. Albeit more expensive than a trip to the flea market or ebay, that should be better if you want to avoid the biggest problems.

    Hnnngh...

Went to the store today. Seeing as I have a 7D and I want something resembling 50mm on a full frame body I have thought of several options.

    1. Buying a 35mm for my 7D
    2. Buying a 50mm and selling my 7D and upgrading to a 5D II

So went in, talked about the samyang 35mm f1.4, turns out it does not have any contacts so that you don't even get any sign if what you are pointing the camera at is in focus. So decided to try a Carl Zeiss 50mm to see if I could make do with it at least until I could sell the 7D. Seller (accidently) gave me a 7D with a Carl Zeiss Distagon 35mm F2.0 to try out instead of the 50mm. ...And I instantly fell in love. Left the store with a considerably lighter wallet. Not sure if happy yet, but oh my god the it is so sexy.

I would have gone with the second option, going for the 5D. Friend of mine did something similar, he shoots sports and events, he used to have a d300 + d700, he sold the d300 and got himself a used d3s instead. Noise handling is so much better compared between d300 and d700, not to mention obviously the d3s.

I got myself an old refurbished Carl Zeiss Jena 50 1.8 Pancolar, will go for a trip with friends over the weekend, will have some shots then I think.

EDIT: How much did you spend on the 35? You might have waited until you hit Germany / continental Europe. Although you would be sorely missing the lens for your trip, which would be a shame.

I considered that, but since I'm going to Berlin at the very end of my trip it would defeat its purpose.

I paid 1130 euros for it. Also since I'm leaving quite soon I would not have time to sell/buy a 5D II and so on.

My fiance's starting a photography course in the new school year so we need to go shopping for a DSLR and appropriate gizmo's.

Could some knowledgeable chaps give us some recommendations on the following:

A worthwhile entry level (cheap) DSLR
Best "bang for buck" mid level DSLR
    Features to look out for
A few tips on accessories (cheap tripods are bad, get a bag with a pink carry strap, etc.)

Can't say we've got a particular budget, we're not going to throw money away on the best for the sake of it, but if we see something that's particularly good value then we don't mind splurging.

We obviously have no accessories either (tripod, bag, lenses, etc) so if anybody knows of any "starter" deals then me know!

Seeing as I don't know much about Nikon I'll say a few general things about Canon

Usually the best/price ratio is found in the Eos xxxD series, find the newest (650 I think) and then get the model before that. As for mid level I would go for the EOS 60D.

The other thing is that when it comes to bang for buck then prime lenses offer the best quality/price ratio but obviously limits you to a single focal length. The 18-55mm (again I think) lens that comes with the camera is usually not that good, a much better cheap option would be either a second hand or new Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 without the stabilizer, at least that was true a year ago or so. But don't spend too much money on the beginning, since it is probably not the camera or the rest of the equipment that is the limiting factor.

I personally would go for Canon or Nikon, but as always, go to a store and get a feel for the cameras they have there. Everyone have difference preferences so actually holding the camera and getting a feel for the ergonomics is quite important. Ignore what the salesman in the store tell you and come back here and ask for advice before buying. She could also check out a mirror-less camera. The Olympus olympus om-d e-m5 is getting stellar reviews and I'm actually considering buying one myself. :3 There are also cheaper alternatives such as various Sony options.
