I forgot this was happening. I saw when he initially made the offer and it was accepted...glad it's going ahead. The guy certainly doesn't lack self belief.

Mr Musk's 100-day pledge will begin once an electricity grid interconnection agreement has been signed.
    Clever Elon.

He did great things with space x tho and I admire him for that. His super factories are cool as fuck too

Cars and rockets are cool but they aren't really the thing he is working to change for the better, our energy systems. And for that he has for example released all Tesla's patents to everyone to use without any royalties.

As someone who delivers projects like this for a living.... FUCKING HELL WHAT IS HE THINKING? 100 days from breaking ground to commissioning might be doable but what about consenting, land rights, grid connection - there's so much shit that's completely out of his control and normally takes much longer.

Maybe in Australia the state government can ram all that shit through easily, or maybe all that stuff is already done.

fakedit: reading some more: "Mr Musk's 100-day pledge will begin once an electricity grid interconnection agreement has been signed." I'm guessing that means all contracts signed, consents obtained etc. Even so.... bet there's a lot of legal conditioning on that pledge.

You're just jelly cause he is doing all those awesome things that is changing the world, while you are stuck reporting on fake news.

Even if it's delivered free, it will function as a loss leader.

Once its up and running and of proven benefit, others will want it.

Whether it's a loss leader or not entirely depends on the revenue contracts / subsidy agreed with the local government. There are plenty of grid scale (albeit 5 - 30MW typically, not 100MW) battery projects that are profitable right now, including at least a dozen in the UK.

Likely there will be some sort of periodic "availability" payment simply for being available to provide power in an emergency, even if there is no emergency.

On top of that Tesla will presumably retain the right to use some of the capacity of the batteries to arbitrage energy prices in the short term (charge at 4am, discharge 6pm etc).

On top of that if they are clever they will also be selling Frequency regulation services, black-start capacity services, then there's the financial benefits to the adjacent wind farm - less grid connection needed (thus more capacity to build more wind with the same connection), less imbalance charges, etc.

There's a lot of potential revenue streams for projects like these if you play your cards right.

To be fair to elon, he is pretty safe on the surface, for a billionaire. They all fuck us over in the end though. Its the dark nature of capitalism.

One of the messiahs of making themselves billions that i never got the love for was Steve Jobs. What the actual fuck sort of bellend likes that prick? Like saying your favourite wrestler from when you were a kid was I.R.S
Steve Jobs is the worst tech messiah of all, hence people will pay loads of money to use wanky closed Apple systems.

I think he has you blocked.

Elon has grand ideas and I like him for that.

He is making a shitload of money while turning his ideas in to real stuff. I wish I was his friend tbh

I think you may be mixing up "like" with "respect".

I actively dislike many of the business practices Elon has been involved with and question how much of his early achievements were due to luck rather than ability, but I respect the contributions to space exploration and energy conservation he has facilitated by bringing the right minds together and using the fame of his name to ensure they have adequate funding.

I can hold the two thoughts in my head at the same time without it exploding.

If he does, mate, you shouldn't deliberately circumvent a block.

Speaking as an Australian, it's pretty exciting. Fingers crossed for maximum success and other states follow suit so we can (long term) get power prices back under control and see return of grid reliability. Last summer really shook people.

Thanks for reminding us of your superior special "elon-like" brain that has a special rare ability to hold multiple thoughts. Have you considered a blog, or maybe a newsletter?
You are very welcome. I know you often forget things.
