After selling off some well timed investments from a while back, I just reached 1m usd, after tax and a small student loan, of which 70% is cash.

To celebrate, I heated up some bolognese I made in a big batch and put in the freezer. Might splurge and have a coke too.

If anyone cares, it started 9 years with 5k usd on a savings account. Realized some gains on an apartment I bought and renovated, made big bets on the company stock options, arduous work, savings and promotion to a job abroad. Regular savings in index funds with the occasional bets on select companies that miraculously paid off.

Guess I’m a global 1%er now, ripe for FHC comrades to put me up against the wall when the revolution comes.

Weird flex but okay. 700k cash isn't 'rich' lmao

I'm pretty sure that's what was promised to every millennial who stayed in school and got a degree.

Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves for slaughter.

How did you buy and renovate an apartment with $5k?

But yes, your fate is up against the wall, alongside class-traitor Comrade "700k cash isn't 'rich; lmao" Keckers.

While he may >100 times richer than me it's not rich in a structurally consequential way. Its the sort of wealth you can live with completely anonymously.

If the timestamp doesn't work, fast forward to 0:33. It's from 2004, when Shaq still got checks signed by people significantly wealthier than him.

5k is what I had after I took out my two degrees. Worked, Saved diligently for two years for the cash deposit, then spent six months on and off renovating. Revalued post renovation and general market uptick, refinanced and increased loan. Went out a thin limb and invested the additional funds in said index funds. Sold when moving abroad at 40% value appreciation.

And while 1m arguably isn’t rich by any means, it will likely only go faster from here. Unless the entire world truly melts down, and by then I’d likely have bigger issues anyway.

My personal goal is really to only work part time and with something I truly enjoy by the time I’m 45, and not be an office wage slave.

The absurdity is that in the wealthiest period of human history you need to strategically plan for this and wait until you're 45.

And it is completely out of reach for the vast majority of humans in the western world who do socially essential jobs.

Yeah, all that investment discussion is really good at reminding me how poor I am, lol.

What the hell is going on with this market? Institutions pumping and dumping like crazy trying to cash in.

Markets seem skittish about the chances of more bailout money from Congress.

There's been a massive paradigm shift in business travel that won't revert quickly, and millions of people have suffered either temporary or permanent unemployment and whenever that happens, consumption drops massively. Not to mention at least in the UK the logistics of continuing to shield the 1.5 million 'extremely vulnerable' people meaning that you also functionally need a further 2-3 million people continuing to socially isolate alongside them to provide the support network.

So yeah, you can get your hair cut, we can kill grandma, but the economy won't recover over night.
Especially after the people that do rush out to, ahem, "claim their liberty back from tyranny", start dying in droves.
I'd have no problem with this, sadly karma ain't so laser guided.
No, there will be a lot of collateral damage. Then again, racism is an inherited trait, so, maybe that _isn't_ a bad thing...
ah yes, the racism gene. What a neat bow to explain it away with
Yeah I must hate people and say the same dumb shit as my grandmother did, or did the fact my other grandparents aren't racist mean I inherited their genes only?

Kids aren't their parents, and anyone here should remember that shit, you were once a kid, do you remember saying "well, I hate these people and I'm full of rage and hormones, I'll just accept what they say and take it as my own, fuck it right?"
I love how you're all somehow surprised about the market being entirely fucky in a situation like this.

Apparently with the help of this easy self-teching app.

It's a recession, consumers respond to recessions the same way the world over, they tighten discretionary spending.

Maybe we need to design an economic system that doesn't rely on full-scale consumerism to be healthy? Maybe? Possibly?
