The movie definitely warrants a rewatch. There certainly are parts which I'd like to see with some hindsight this time. The movie felt overly long, and I have an idea that the part where Finn and Rose are betrayed by Benicio del Torro was added in to make the rebels plight more drastic. But, on the other hand, there were a LOT of scenes which were specifically there to point out the duality of the force and the ideologies supporting it as well as the greyer parts of human morality. Poe Dameron's little rebellious act had a purpose, even if a slightly abstract one, in showing that there is more to winning wars than one plucky hero. I literally laughed out loud in the theatre when Luke sucked weird sea animal tit milk.

If anything, at the moment I sort of feel the director was torn between making a really cerebral star wars movie, with a lot of depth, and the usual vacuous crap that is traditional star wars.

Best part was still the Porgs.

    So this Christmas was Porgageddon.

Large talking Porg for home. Small talking Porg for my office.

And Chewbacca with Porg figure for my desk.

At least the Porgs weren't pushed too much (in film), I can't really remember them besides a couple of scenes.

    BB-8 on the other hand...

Apparently the porgs came into existence because Luke's island is a natural preserve irl and it's covered in puffins and they couldn't remove them (digitally or otherwise). So basically they VFXd on top of those.

This is true. I’m sure the marketing team fucking jumped on it regardless, but it was a pretty smart way of dealing with Skelligs puffin extravaganza.

This movie was all over the place. Starting the movie with that comedy bit between Poe and Hox was a bizarre choice that sabotaged the set-up for the movie. I don't love the comedy in these movies, but TFA had a better balance. Finn walking around spraying water everywhere is just wtf. Luke throwing the light saber away is fine, but again I have no idea why they play it for laughs. Even the hard cut to the jedi island is pretty jarring.

Apparently people are pretty buttmad about the way this movie shits on their expectations for Luke, and all the unanswered questions in TFA, but that's not the problem. The problem is that it's a poorly paced, poorly structured and tonally inconsistent movie. For example, why is the climax of Rey's story so far removed from the climax of the movie? A lot of the dialogue is ass-tier. The whole casino planet bit feels like something out of the prequels and should have been cut in its entirety. I think the scene where Finn fights Phasma sums up the movie quite well, it's vapid action, lacking tension and gravitas, and is resolved in a completely unearned way.

The callbacks to the OT were a bit jarring to me, Rey surrendering herself like in ROTJ, a tracking device on a ship, rebel base evac to open the movie and dark side cave all from Empire etc, but that's least of the problems.

I also disliked the cinematography, but maybe that's just because I saw Blade Runner so many times and ESB has some amazing scenes. This one had like one or two okay shots.

Another issue with the whole tracking device bullshit:

"The Empire is tracking us! How is that possible!?!"

"How is Rey going to find us?

Oh, this handy tracking device I've got on my wrist will let her know where we are across the galaxy."

"But how is the Empire tracking us?"

-- Side quest happens, Empire's tracking thing gets blown up. Empire doesn't decide to track the obviously incredibly powerful beacon that hasn't gotten turned off....

Tracking beacons are not new tech in Star Wars, they used one in A New Hope to track the Falcon back to Yavin.

The point was they were tracking the Resistance fleet without having a beacon onboard the ship.

quite, the beacons are two-way by the way, the books make that clear, but they are paired, so if you've got one you can find the other, but only if you've got one.

the first order sorted out how to track stuff trough hyperspace without such a beacon.
    Viking, n.:
    1. Daring Scandinavian seafarers, explorers, adventurers, entrepreneurs world-famous for their aggressive, nautical import business, highly leveraged takeovers and blue eyes.
    2. Bloodthirsty sea pirates who ravaged northern Europe beginning in the 9th century.

Hagar's note: The first definition is much preferred; the second is used only by malcontents, the envious, and disgruntled owners of waterfront property.

None the less, having two different means of tracking didn't do the plot any favors. I was certainly waiting for them to discover that Leia's beacon was the source of the problem, and was slightly confused for a bit when it wasn't. It became a distraction.
