    Windows 7 voodoo

I don't even know where to start with this one. I left one of my laptops with my gf for a while (Windows 7 Pro, unimportant specs). There were three accounts total on that computer, mine (administrator), her's (standard user) and another one (standard user) for her mother who would use it infrequently. Obviously my own account was configured as per my wishes, with mapped network drives and software that's useful to me.

I remote into it today via TeamViewer because gf complained it asks for an admin password for MS Word shits (which it does on every new account), so I logged in to upgrade her account to admin. Only to find out my account has been reset somehow and I'm logged out of everything (Dropbox, Steam, Razer Synapse, etc), preferences were reset (Windows sounds are yuck), wallpaper gone, start menu reset with that getting started shit, some apps uninstalled (only identified Whatsapp as being removed) whilst most of them still there. Most importantly, all my desktop items were gone to shit.

Wtf happened? And how? Login accounts are the same and their passwords are still there in place, as well as the fingerprint software and saved fingerprints for login.

I'm not really bothered (jk, I'm close to furious), but I need to know how this may have happened and how to prevent it in the future (except don't lend your laptop to other people and similar advice ).

    Thank you!

Have you looked in the "Users" folder, if there's a second folder for your account? The original one may have become corrupted and Win has created a "clean" new copy. So the apps/parts/data that are retrieved from i.e. HKLM still work, whereas HKCU is new/blank. Would explain whay some apps seem to be uninstalled (there's that ungood tendency of apps being installed in \AppData\Local to circumvent the need for administrative privilegues during install, if it's only a "copy deployment".

Will check when I get my hands back on it, but that would mean some catastrophic failure happened in between

    Would that directory be hidden?

It needs nothing more than a bad block on a part of the disk, that hosts your account's HKCU hive (in C:\Users\<Account>) and the profile is broken.

    Yes, AppData is hidden:
    Code:
    C:\Users\Hel>dir app*
Datenträger in Laufwerk C: ist SYSTEM
     Volumeseriennummer: 123

     Verzeichnis von C:\Users\Hel

    01.11.2013 17:44 <DIR> Application Data
                   0 Datei(en), 0 Bytes
                   1 Verzeichnis(se), 116.457.238.528 Bytes frei

    C:\Users\Hel>cd appdata

    C:\Users\Hel\AppData>dir
Datenträger in Laufwerk C: ist SYSTEM
     Volumeseriennummer: 123

     Verzeichnis von C:\Users\Hel\AppData

    14.03.2017 10:25 <DIR> Local
    19.11.2016 10:55 <DIR> LocalLow
    14.03.2017 11:15 <DIR> Roaming
                   0 Datei(en), 0 Bytes
                   3 Verzeichnis(se), 116.457.234.432 Bytes frei

Ok so wrapping this up-to-date teamviewed into the lappie to investigate and lo and behold my account is back to its old self. Voodoo indeed.

Going to have to run an exorcism on the thing.

I had this on Windows 10, I was pissed to say the least! Turns out it was because the account info was unavailable when I logged in, hence the default stuff. A quick reboot (honestly did you not just reboot straight away as standard?) and it was fixed. I even had a little error when I logged in originally but I forgot what it said as I just hit enter.

I think it may actually save your data from being corrupted, like a safe mode "hey your profile is weird or something I dunno, I didn't touch it, here's something to get you through your porn fix"

I was teamviewed into the thing and didn't even for a second think about rebooting, my bad.

I work in support. I should have known better and asked for that very basic stuff, but I trusted my fellow FHC autists to cover basic "first aid" stuff before asking for help here.

Glad to read it's not a real issue, but rather just a hiccup.
