Apparently managed to spent about 4 hours doing random sidequests and upgrading shit
I really enjoy these side-quests, there're the perfect way to do "show, don't tell" as part of the story, and the use of the soundtrack at the end of some of them is uh, haunting.
Oh also, use the dynamic scanner everywhere, thank me later

I'm about 30 hours in, this is my first Japanese-y Japanese game. There are a few weeb bait bits but overall it's not a big deal. I'm really enjoying the story and watching layer after layer of the onion get peeled back. Also the soundtrack is great. Combat is enjoyable if you like Bayonetta or Devil May Cry fast-paced slashing.
Oh and you can ride a moose.
Spoiler:
Not sure how much stock you put in Jim Sterling, but he had a pretty positive review: http://www.thejimquisition.com/nier-automata-review/

ayyy
can't wait for his syndromeda
meh
He really misses the point a few times in that review
also he heavily spoils the game, as usual, and doesn't seem to see how they make the story "work"
then again, his "thing" is to hate games, so iunno
specifically I don't understand his complaints about the sidequests and "needing to do multiple playthroughs"
i really enjoyed the sidequests and so far each playthrough has been different enough that it might as well be a new game.
His complaints about the difficulty/breaking the game via plugin chips are accurate though

So who else found this
Spoiler:
Also I have now gone from "this is a good game" to "I fucking love this".
Welp.
Couldn't bring myself to sacrifice my data in the end. Neat idea, though.
You're missing a couple endings I found by wandering off during important plot events, which results in some pretty funny messages mostly revolving around 2B's love of fishing
Also, I found a fix for the fix for the resolution, Xenosis 1 - Angry Modder 0
money money

Yeah, I got one entirely accidentally by going out of bounds right as a certain important radio message comes in. Something like "Suddenly she felt like going for a stroll. When she came back everyone was dead." Roll credits, thank you, come again.
Edit: They're optional sidequests, but I highly suggest anyone playing do the "Emil's Memories" quest in playthrough A and/or B, then the "Gathering Keepsakes" quest in C.
Route C is uh
Unexpected
edit: oh dear
I should have expected this after Nier I guess

You'll go back there for an Ending.
Or maybe a Beginning. Also the best remix of a Nier track in Automata
(Strongly advise people to read the weapon stories, specifically the ones from "that" vendor, it puts a pretty different spin on Ending E, especially if you've played Nier 1)
