It won't be a fad once the technology catches up... give it 10 years or so and we'll probably be ditching huge monitors for a pair of sunglasses
Sell it now, buy it back for half the price in five years.

yeah, no, well, no touching this thread.
J'ai violé votre vaisseau spatial. C'était amusant....!

EVE once was about internet spaceships. Then those became serious business.
Now all that is left is serious business, and spaceships are docked for two years till after the Dust of Incarna

Well, yes. February 2016 (with the introduction of skill injectors) was apparently CCP's most profitable month on record. This for a 19 year old company at the time. Now you've also got the spike in players with alpha clones, EVE Valkyrie is THE killer app for VR and now available on all 3 major platforms (Rift, Vive and PSVR) and Gunjack is the highest selling mobile VR game full stop. And yet some armchair experts can't look past "lul CCP are dumb because they took so long to nerf Svipuls" and hurf blurf about minor game balance issues like any of that even remotely matters from a real world business standpoint. When the value of a company like CCP is weighed up it's not just what they've got on the books now but also their track record and the earnings potential they have in the future. Turns out CCP have somehow managed to operate a profitable MMO for 13 years (where most fold after two), recover from some grave missteps that would have sunk other companies (WoD/Dust) and also ended up at the forefront of virtual reality. lol, yeah I guess they're pretty dumb because they added jump fatigue to capitals, hey?
Bingo, bango, bongo. EVE is doing well, but CCP is also (unexpectedly) killing it at VR at this early stage. This is probably the most successful the company has been since right before the White Wolf acquisition (since that turned out to be a bit of an albatross around their collective neck).

Granted, CCP isn't making the kind of profits right now to justify a $900M valuation, but if you're an investor looking to make money off of VR, you have to be asking yourself if buying CCP now will pay off in the long run by parlaying their early success to later mass-market success. Meanwhile if you're CCP's owners, if someone is coming to you with an unsolicited offer for a pretty good chunk of change, you have to ask yourself if you're better off getting out now for a tidy profit (given the overvaluation) or whether you roll the dice like your potential buyer is planning. This is what happens with successful, project-driven companies. It's time to decide who gets off the crazy train now, and who's riding it up Mount Money.

It will be hard to have a mass market success with VR when there will never be a mass market for it.

Just like there would never be a mass market for video games, right?

VR will be huge down the line. It's still in its infancy and it's already pretty popular.

Blizzard might actually be able to develop something decent out of the clusterfuck that is EVE online. EVE has survived in spite of CCP, not because of it.

As Verite brought up Whitewolf, I'll add that these fools killed off one of my favorite game settings so completely that we will probably not see another World of Darkness RPG published for a very long time. CCP incompetence destroyed a highly successful franchise. Thankfully Paradox rescued it.

Blizzard knows how to make decent games, unlike CCP. Taking CCP out of EVE would be the best thing to ever happen to the franchise. I doubt it's Blizzard looking to buy though.

    Are you really going to ~sales numbers~ and ~mass appeal~ on...Eve?

    Just no.

Taking CCP out of EVE would be the best thing to ever happen to the franchise

I also think Ubisoft should buy Dwarf Fortress..

Out of the 3, one rightfully caused a lot of outrage and really still isn't a great game, one is probably p. damn good but I have never played it, and Overwatch looks good as well but I personally find it appeal to be non-existent.
edit: unless you meant hearthstone where I meant D3, and hearthstone grows boring/annoying really quickly as well. Lovely presentation though.

Entirely a matter of taste. I for one still argue that SC2 pales in comparison to Supcom:FA as a multiplayer RTS and that all Blizzard games of the past years are clearly inferior to to their predecessors (SC2 is equal, but has the godawful storytelling compared to the first)
