I am thinking about getting a 21:9 monitor of the 1440p variety. Do any of you fine people have experience with those? Anything particular I would need to look out for?

I got the Acer Predator X34A.
This screen is EPIC! The curve seems very slack, but gives perfect image angle.
If you are going for this screen, make sure its a X34A and not a X34. The first model has corner bleeds
and not as good refresh rate. The X34A can also pivot and swivel.

Don't know what size you are going for, but my 34" is MASSIVE!
Not just the huge physical size of the screen, but the foot is also of gargantuan scale.
All games I have tried sofar, supports the 21:9 format.
But for streaming, you will get black bars on the size. YouTube doesn't support 21:9 (or I have not found any content yet).
Movies and TV shows, also come in puny 16:9


1) Asus 34" LED G-Sync Rog Swift PG348Q
Pro: Everything
Con: Price and Foot (It is insane), some corner bleeding.

2) Acer 34" Predator Curved LED G-Sync X34A
Pro: No bleed, it is amazing.
Con: Price, menus on screen is ass (but its a one time only nightmare)
Not guaranteed to get 100mhz refresh rate.


For gaming, those two are the only serious contestants.

TBH, if you don't have a corner desk. 34" might borderline on too big, as I learned.
Starting to get used to it. It's like sitting on the first rows at the cinema.

The Asus is a safe and sensible bet.
Quality guaranteed, but the foot is annoying.

Acer has superior design, I even like the light under the screen.
I believe on the asus its at the bottom of the foot. (Acer also comes fully assembled so the box is enormous)

In the end, I did a coinflip between the two screens.

Thank you for the warning. I have a "standard office" sized desk at home which I only use for the computer, so that should be fine for the type of display. I might at some point ask you to measure something if I indeed get the Acer display.

I know what you mean with "first rows at the cinema" - that is why I would like a display of this type.

Which candidates are you down to now?

Not sure yet, I am just getting started. Plus I am not at all in a rush so I might wait for a bit for model refreshes or the like. I'll probably ditch the flat/"non-curved" models from my list as well though. I'll have to find a store to look at some of these things I think.

34", 100Hz, Freesync, VA panel, Quantum Dot backlight. Should be the best 34" by a good margin when it arrives next month.

I've had the U3415W for close to 2 years now. Still love it, but if I were to purchase today I'd look at the g-sync/freesync and >60Hz options. I have some decent corner backlight bleed but I really only notice if I'm watching a movie, which is a very rare occurrence on my desktop.

I'd wait another 2 months or so. AMDs VEGA is supposed to come out Q1 2017 and might drop prices a bit. Or it might be competitive and allow you to go with a freesync monitor instead of the more expensive g-sync.

Of course there's always the next thing coming out, but spending ~1k moneys on something as long-lived as a monitor+GPU 2 months before a generational jump and maybe, finally, the return of competition seems excessive.
