What 4K smart TV to buy?

Anyone knowledgable about 4K smart TVs? I am looking to buy one and have narrowed it down to 2 contenders: Sony KD-49XD7004 or Samsung UE50KU6079UXZG. I think it comes down to Android TV (Sony) vs Tizen OS (Samsung). So far I am favouring Tizen a bit more, but im not 100% convinced yet. Also i dont have a Adroid phone for the interconnectability.

I plan to use the TV mainly for (precentage of usage in brackets):
- watching mkv/mp4//H.264 movies/series from a NAS drive (80%)
- accessing my music libary from NAS and acting as a music player (10%)
- streaming twitch/youtube/etc. from my PC (is that even possible?) (9%)
- a bit of normal TV (maybe) (1%)


I'm open for other tv models as well, with the following specs:
- 4K resolution
- 43'' - 50'' size
- compatability for mkv, mp4, etc.
- less than 800€
- WLAN, LAN


Any ideas or suggestions?

I have a Smart TV and I want it to be more of a dumb monitor then anything. I have a PS4 + Chromecast for everything. Took me quite a bit of fidgeting to turn off the "send Samsung everything" feature^tm.

Because i dont want to have to use a additional device to watch my movies via a big screen. Also all those 4K TV are smart TVs anyways, arent they?

P. much this. I'm still using an ancient Samsung 36'' peasant TV and I'm happy with it except the only way it does 1080 is 1080i

I was in the market for a Panasonic Viera plasma screen, but they took that out of production, who wants those brilliant colours anyway? Better stick some "apps" on the shit, it'll sell nicely with the masses

On my Samsung the picture quality just isn't the same when going through the HDMI input. And yes, I have almost all post processing shit disabled.
Played natively movies just look better.
Plus casting youtube shit from the android phone is pretty neat....and that's a 2011? TV.


If you're that paranoid about the TV sending shit to Samsung block it from the network. An additional device to use DLNA and/or plex is meh imho.

main problem with smart-tv's is that the "smart-part" is gonna get old/unsupported very quickly (hw and sw), so you'll be forced to plug in something like chromecast/roku/pi eventually

There is a difference to the US (and I assume the UK as well): in Germany you don't use set top boxes to access TV channels as most shit is for free on cable anyway and the pay tv options are shit or ridiculous expensive. So adding set top boxes and similar systems to the TV seems weird. Roku doesn't sell here, Apple TV sold less here than in other markets in comparison. And Amazon is advertising for their fire TV stuff harder than they should.

I'd probably go with Sony as they had the better picture quality in the past.

Why you'd buy a 4k TV in the first place though, we barely get 1080 for TV. 4k Bluray is for now upscaled from 1080 masters. Netflix only offers few things in 4k. And even what they offer is sabotaged by our shitty Internet speeds.

Would go for a dumb tv + some kind of box over a smart tv. TV is a peripheral, like a computer monitor. But I can understand not wanting to bother. You have to be sure whatever box you get does the 4k well at the fps you want (lot of the cheaper android boxes are capped at 30, though I dunno if that matters).

I don't think anyone wants a smart TV. There's very little choice in the matter. Want something bigger than 24"? It'll be super smart and hdr and maybe curved and it'll have LOADS OF APPS.

Even if you just want a screen to plug into your STB.

There is always one version of the TV without smart technology. Unless its samsung or something, though they are so far up their ass in development they have TV's that almost cost as much as my house.

Well the problem still stands, you hardly can get 4k material.

That said those Vizio's would be perfect for you. No TV tuner units but with smart TV units. But not sold in Germany (or Europe IIRC).
