Synology can run Plex, pihole, surveillance software, and the UniFi controller software? At the same time?

This just made my RPi and planned homelab obsolete. I just hope that I can swap out the 512MB of RAM for my 4GB stick.

No it won't run plex transcoding in 4k with that Celeron. I see there's some hardware encoding support mentioned but a.) you'd need a plex pass and b.) not sure if it'll run on that synology distro
    (didn't watch the video)

    Apparently you're somewhat correct :

Just that you'll still need a plex pass and it won't work out of the box, gotta manually install 64bit plex server and ignore the synology appstore.

Synology NAS can run Docker, but you will probably want to max out the memory (so 8 rather than 4 GB), especially if you also want to run Plex on the same machine.

Synology DS120j arrived today, along with a Seagate IronWolf 3TB NAS drive. Impressions:

Seagate drives are noisy when they turn on, but have quiet operation once up to speed.
The Synology unit is...more delicate than I expected. I expected some stiffer plastic and a matte finish that would resist scratches. Otherwise it seems fine.
The memory is soldered to the board, and there is no RAM slot for upgrades. So I'm stuck with 512MB. That said, it should be enough for pihole.
This unit won't run Plex well, which is fine. I wasn't going to jump into it right away.
The interface is exactly like that in the video I linked, and fairly intuitive.
Did run into a glitch while updating packages: I clicked "update all", but it didn't seem to update. I think I got it to work eventually, but I'm not sure.
Turning on/off and rebooting takes an abnormally long time (over 5 minutes in some cases).

Need to change router settings to allow a static IP, then will put it into service.

edit: What would it take to communicate with a Synology via HTTPS on a LAN?

How much did this cost all in all?

Also no need for https on your lan

My HP Microserver (N36L) still serving me strong after all these years. Had it for almost 7 years now and still haven't managed to fill its 12TB capacity. FreeBSD is an excellent NAS OS

The 120j is a single bay unit with an ARM chip. It retails around €100 here.

Control Panel -> Security -> tab 'Certificate'.

A self-signed cert is already present and should work ou of the box. To connect to your box with HTTPS, try https://<host name>:5001 (the default port for HTTP is 5000)

In Control Panel -> Network -> tab 'DSM settings' you can also enable automatic redirection of HTTP -> HTTPS.

There are ways to have Synology use a Let's Encrypt cert, but all involve a) making your box accessable from the outside and b) a public DNS entry for your box.

Lucky you, it is soon time to add another 10TB drive or two here, only 2.7TB free.

$100 for the NAS, ~$54 for the drive, and about an hour of my time.

Wanted a WD Red, but $54 is the cheapest I've ever seen for a NAS drive.

That's not bad at all. I run 4 WD Reds on mine. I think they have a bit of a misplaced rep, never had one fail on me in all these years. *knock on wood*

I'm down to 1.4TB of free space on my RAID 6 array so another 10TB drive has been ordered. This will bring up the total usable storage from 46TB to 55TB (8 disks in total)

I couldn't come up with enough data to fill two TB. Geez.

Unless I created a Steam repository on my network.

Once you start ripping UHD disks you use 50-70GB at a time.

Speaking of which, what's the preferred program to archive my DVDs and Blu-Rays? Handbrake? And which software should be used to access them?

I ripped all my old dvds with handbrake, and added them to my Plex server.
