    This.

At the moment "counter arguments" are nothing more than a good way of identifying unreliable sources.

I strongly advise you to asses where you got those counter-arguments from Max.
it just seems to monumentally baize and stupid to do it this way. Putin is many thing, but dumb and bad at politics are not on that list by a long shot, assuming May doesn't fold, and she propably will all told, it seems like the risk of the whole thing turning into a enormous own goal is far to large to justify the gains.
Except its not dumb. Constantly pushing the limits of what it can get away with to erode resistance is a standard part of modern Russia's asynchronous warfare.

With a distracted and divided UK government that is awash with Russian funding and an ineffectual White-House that goes remarkably silent every time Russia comes up, now is the perfect time to try and break or strain some of the formal and informal western alliances with an attack that has just enough plausible deniability to prevent a wider backlash.

The fact that this exact type of attack on the UK, with that exact goal, has been predicted by our military and security experts for a few months now (given the current geopolitical setting), it shouldn't surprise anyone.

there is pushing the limit, and then there's putting nerve agents out in a build-up area of a foreign country.

the whole polonium cocktail was a while ago, and i can see how it's a escalation based on that but the size of the escalation is completely out of proportion to what i would expect, it doesn't leave space for any sort of non-committal response on part of the British state, something they've usually taken pains to do in the past.

there's a enormous difference between offing individual dissidents and letting a nerve agent out in a city.
    Viking, n.:
    1. Daring Scandinavian seafarers, explorers, adventurers, entrepreneurs world-famous for their aggressive, nautical import business, highly leveraged takeovers and blue eyes.
    2. Bloodthirsty sea pirates who ravaged northern Europe beginning in the 9th century.

Hagar's note: The first definition is much preferred; the second is used only by malcontents, the envious, and disgruntled owners of waterfront property.

That was a good one. Not going to happen. Never. In any sports.

Those authoritarian countries will the last countries still willing to host these ridiculous sport events, where the organization (FIFA etc.) reaps all the profits (by rule, all profits from the Soccer WC is tax free for the FIFA) and the local tax payer is presented the bill. None of these sports events ever generated a profit.

So more and more (citizens of) countries are no longer willing to host these events.

The World Cup can easily generate a profit. It's probably the only major world event that can. It only doesn't generate a profit when you sell the event to a third world dictatorship that uses it as an excuse to embezzle $100Bn via stadium construction and infrastructure projects. If Germany or England or the US or Italy or Spain or half a dozen other countries were to be awarded the World Cup they could host it on a month's notice without spending any substantial sums.

There is unlikely to ever be anything more than national-level protest via sport because UEFA and FIFA are corrupt as fuck.

The problem these days is that a lot of the arguments work both ways.

If the Russians did want to see him dead, he could have been killed (by the Russians) when in Russian custody, without much public bravado. "He's dead, Jim" and move on to the next guy. If they want to send a message (to whom?), they would have killed him the way it was done ... but didn't they supposedly not already send a message with the Polonium kill, which they also were attributed with? So why send the same message again? Russia might actually have done it, to reinforce/renew that message. But at the same time some other entity might want to direct the blame towards Russia.

This is all very confusing. And given how our very own intelligence agencies have no repent to lie to their citizens and government, I doubt that the public will ever know the real truth.

Low. The "correct" response, assuming the evidence is there, is some form of widespread asset seizure and embargo; shittonnes of dodgy russian money still flows through banks and companies under UK jurisdiction. Unfortunately to do that properly would mean imposing a bunch of rules onto the crown dependencies (that's you chaps) and getting european cooperation. Neither of which she's in a particularly good position to do.

m8, Russian money in the UK has far more to do with the city than the offshore places, we have extremely restrictive compliance laws and the oligarchs don't like that very much.

I'm actually being serious, the city is hilariously lax compared to the crown dependencies (and other places like Luxembourg)
