Plenty of people in their 20s are well paid but have to work 60 hours a week for it. I live with a few of them. No money is worth that.

The courses I've looked at also all have a barrier of entry which I can't get over, a degree.
what do you consider well paid btw keckers?

Heh, classic Tories. There was a story the other day about Theresa May setting up a blind trust when she became PM instead of divesting, pointing out that doesn't really prevent conflicts of interest because she knows what businesses the trust was invested in at the point she created it.

    I just saw this - http://www.cbsnews.com/news/culture-...research-says/

So they are basically saying that our Race is in our DNA, and has an impact on things like our culture, values and stuff?

I read it as saying CULTURE potentially impacts our DNA

I'm not doing engineering again. Most of my course mates were weird egotistical pricks and most of the people I worked with in engineering after university were either incompetent or the good ones so bad at communicating I'm amazed they managed to ever get a job.

It's an industry bubble I'm glad to have escaped.

    Same interpretation here.

It actually means that upbringing has an even greater impact than previously thought, as your genetic heritage will be altered by your environment rather than defined purely at conception.

Sounds like it, and this article is about DNA methylation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNA_methylation), which is different to "the DNA".

    Ahh, ok, got it.

So DNA could be shaped by culture.

So people from different cultures could have different DNA?

So is it still a social thing, but more long term, over many generations?

So if your family is a bunch of druggie nobodys then unless you score really high on life points you'll probs follow suit?

Yes, our environment affects our genes, the specific mechanism is methylation where a methyl group of attaches itself to a gene and shuts it down, preventing that gene from producing the protein it'd normally generate. But DNA methylation used in the story is just an another word for epigenetics, a field of research focusing on this phenomena. This is a huge field, one of the classic studies of it was a Swedish cohort study where they studied how a famine back in the day affected their grandchildren even when food supply of the grandchildren was adequate: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96verkalix_study

Just to be really specific, the culture does not shape our DNA - it just activates or deactivates specific genes.

Would you perhaps then be able to attribute polish pessimism/scepticism to the fact their country has been raped pillaged and ghetto'd over many generations?

What this could mean is that if your family is genetically predisposed to addiction, then the correct upbringing could actually eliminate that predisposition from your genetic code.

is it like, for example, Europeans being somewhat tolerant of alcohol, because we traditionally distilled our water, while Asians and Native Americans tended to boil water and thus are less tolerant of alcohol?

But what is a "Correct upbringing" and how can one tell if one is genetically predisposed to addiction?

I think the exact example you give as an example would be actually "in the DNA" (through natural selection as there is no penalty for being less tolerant to alcohol) as opposed to "in the genetic expression" aka "working copies" of DNA that you make all the time.

The process from the article is more like to "environmental effect x causes DNA bit a to not be used, because it gets blocked when copies are made" (Example: if your mother/you are malnutritioned during pregnancy, you will be more likely to become schizophrenic later on). I think methylation also gets almost completely reset in the next generation, so does not carry over (much) I think. This is all from high school biology though, so it would be great for someone "proper" to correct me.
