Europe lost between 30 and 60% of its population to the black death, back in the day. The 2005 estimate of mortality of the Spanish flu is 3% (world wide).

It's not fine now by any means. But the data shows clearly that in the countries that were lucky / rich enough to vaccinate, a lot of deaths have been prevented. (Mind you, if the current shenanigans keep up we'll lose people to other diseases because the IC beds are occupied by covid-patients. Yes, most of those are unvaccinated.)

We've seen the lockdowns for the schools, bars+restaurants, even outdoor spaces like parks, basically anything that isn't an essential workplace so people's lives are expected to be just a pod existence of working and then going straight home.

owww this story gets better. Out of 601 just half were Dutch and got offered a voluntary pcr test, 180 refused and just went home. The other 300 are not even counted if they took a test or not. lololololololololololol

This was just on the news. Its like they WANT a code black in all hospital holy shit.
There was also no protocol in place for a new quarantine plane, took them 12 hours to test all who wanted with 3 yes 3! healthcare workers (all those people were also in the same room for that time). So far 13 omicron cases.

Yes, i'm fucking angry. Then i read the news about that new variant from south africa and this one might, again might be the one (escape variant, means vaccines aren't working on it). So far 24 serious mutations and especially lots of them on the spike protein. Spreading potential 30-50% faster than Delta... Hallelujah

It is far from established fact that Omicron mutates faster. This particular variant was a large jump, but is suspected to have been cultivated in an immune-compromised individual. The evidence that it will continue to mutate at this rate is currently inconclusive.

I'm not a virologist but in medicine there are lots of metrics used to measure rate of change which quite often end up being misleading (but still diagnostically useful) due to incomplete data across the whole timeframe.

Was that not a production and delivery problem? I remember a big factory in Belgium had major problems and initial vaccine needed to be cooled at non standard temperatures, both those issues are remedied.

According to Swedish passengers from one of the flights, they kept everyone in the same closed space for 12h and people who had tested positive were just walking around the group bemoaning their fate and swearing at the officials. Said Swedish passengers then got on their connection to Stockholm, so I guess we should have it here in time for Christmas.
