From the computer to the TV, how?

I live in an awesome apartment where my living room TV is exactly on the opposite side of the wall where my office desktop is. So I have an HDMI cable and a USB cable running through the wall (via the cable TV faceplates, which are adjacent in the two rooms). This is nice because I can watch stuff from the computer on my TV by just switching active monitors and using a wireless USB keyboard+mouse at the living room couch.

I'm moving soon, to an apartment where the layout won't allow this. So what are my options for getting stuff to the TV? As I see it, I can:

    1. Run an HDMI cable. This might be impossible or expensive (long-ass HDMI cable) or just really ugly depending on where things end up.
    2. Get some sort of wireless A/V transmitter.
    3. Build another basic computer as a dedicated HTPC in the living room, and it can just pull the files over WiFi.

So, is option 2 actually not a gimmick? How cheaply could option 3 be done?

Option 2 is not a gimick but its flaky depending on the space, so Option 3 is IMO the best option and tbh how cheap depends on what you want need Roku/boxee box might already do what you need.

I got a 30 foot HDMI cable for not much money and honestly, I don't really notice a image worse than I'd want from it so.. that might work.

2 looks pretty cool tbh if they price it right

one thing is how are you going to make your wireless mouse and keyboard work?

    my opinion?

USB wifi stick and free OS of your choice and you are set.

Re: From the computer to the TV, how?

The layout in the new apartment puts the office still adjacent to the living room, but on the wrong side of the living room. There's actually an option 4 which is set the living room up backwards, but it would be seriously awkward, and leave no place to put at least 1 of the surround speakers.

So if I do option 2, the USB for the keyboard can come through the wall and have its wireless receiver at the back of the room.

$400 seems like a lot to me for option 3. Hell, my desktop is an i3-530. All I need to be able to do is play a 1080p mkv and output 5.1 over HDMI—how low can I go on hardware?

I agree with Ryas suggestion, there is no reason you couldnt run a 30ft hdmi cable (or longer) but you would need to go to the other room to control it :s

These are all streaming products but most have some sort of media player built in as well. Or you could get an upgraded smart TV

I have Samsung's 55" LCD with apps built in and all i need to do is hook up a USB harddrive to it and it will play back most media types. Since it has hulu and Netflix apps though 90% of what we watch is streaming right off the web to the TV and then on the rare case were we want something new or something we own we will rent from Redbox or pop in a DVD/Bluray.

Re: From the computer to the TV, how?

I had a similar issue, but instead of fucking around with HDMI cables I bought an external HDD which I can then attach to the TV via HDMI.

Works like a charm. If you're going to control what you're watching from the PC in another room, you might as well just preload everything onto the HDD and then watch it at your leisure with a remote control.

Quality is pretty good for me too, playing bluray stuff adequately, with no hassle.

Get a console (blasphemy, I know) and then stream via the network.

Get a PS3/360, both come with wireless Ethernet and costs less than the above htpc build. Enjoy.

Thanks for all the suggestions. There are a lot of options that I hadn't considered. We're gonna wait til we move and see exactly what the room layout is.

i m running ps3 media server and have one tv hooked up via ethernet and another via wireless.

works a treat. can browse via tv remote and watch any format flawlessly.

obviously only an option if your tv has network capability.
