I wouldn't even go after the VPN operator. I'd just get my mate who runs the door list at whatever colo DC they're using to let me in on a quiet monday night and stick a usb stick in their servers. Job done.

On a possible unrelated note, VPN has shit the bed this past week. I think it's my ISP trying to throttle traffic to and from VPN IPs but I have no real clue. Nothing was changed the past week on my end, modem is giving the all-clear. My paranoia tells me someone is up to something.

    1. Wait for neighbors to go on vacation.
    2. Order expensive stuff using their Amazon account and choose Prime shipping.
    3. Porch pirate it when it arrives.

@Nordstern that's one valid attack certainly.

@Joe they mention in the paper that setting a pin is not especially robust though it is at least some defense.

    In other news,

Well, NordVPN got hacked and didn't disclose it for a while. Wait for Linus or JayzTwoCents to make a recommendation.

Those two are seriously your idea of a reliable recommendation?

Gamer's nexus dropped nordvpn as a channel sponsor when news about the hack emerged, despite presumably losing money for doing so, I'd be inclined to consider their opinion.

My approach has been pick any VPN since you can't really audit them as an individual so it becomes purely about public spectacle. Nord took the right approach in fixing and auditing the breach before disclosing it, and supposedly have third-party white hats that test their security and do audits, but someone else would've wanted them to announce the breach as soon as they found it and either way it took them months to find.

So on an individual level I say pick whatever, and as an industry my hope is competition will keep VPN providers on the up and up; I have no doubt you could start up a VPN provider that doesn't do anything and most people wouldn't know until someone a little more savvy noticed their traffic wasn't being properly redirected or encrypted.

Nord spend all their money on influencers. If they spent any money on external pen tests their breach would have been found in about ten minutes.
