Antivirus is shit, everything is compromised, etc etc (Cybersecurity thread)

So, my Kaspersky subscription expires tomorrow and I'm not interested in renewing it. Especially after they snuck a little add-on into Firefox without telling me, and it can't be removed. Even if "disabled", a portion of the code still runs.

I've gotten by with Spybot S&D and occasional scans by Malwarebytes in the past, but what's better? Haven't been brought up to speed on what's effective and what's a waste of system resources.

Don't bother tbh, turn off Javascript except for places like Amazon or your bank, remove flash, sandbox your browser and don't run random .exe's.....

What spitroast said. Adblockers ftw too!
Also you can run multiple browser profiles (at least in Firefox), or browsers, if you want a more/less locked-down one for certain uses.
Your router's probably more likely to be attacked than your PC these days. Just don't download random shit or browse dodgy sites. Ofc assuming you're not also one to fall for "driver/computer support" websites, emails & cold calls.

    1. I already run Adblock Plus and NoScript. How does one sandbox a browser like Firefox?
    2. How can I protect my router from attack? I have two Linksys routers.
    3. How do I go about running virtual machines? I have an Intel Core i5-3570 CPU, if that helps.
    3. How do I VPN? Probably deserves its own thread.

    1. Sandboxie or a virtual machine
    2. Don't worry about it
    3. VMware or VirtualBox
    4. Choose a provider and beware of DNS leaks

    What the other said.
Don't download doggy stuff from websites. Stay away from cracks and key gens for games and other programs.
I use windows defender. It works and does not use many resources. Good integration into windows. Free and no ads.

BACK UP YOUR STUFF! Some Trojans / virus stuff will encrypt all your .doc, .jpeg and .txt file and ransom you.

Make sure the firmware is up to date. Switch default password for both the administration stuff and wifi.
Disable wifi if you don't use it.

It has VT-x, so that is good for performance.

If you want to download something from untrusted sources, you can download it into a linux VM and try to run it in there. Maybe upload it to https://www.virustotal.com

Oh and the biggest favour you can do yourself for your router is disabling WPS. And having a non-shit password.

I got in the habit of backing up regularly, and then I built an image of windows that is pre-configured with all my nonsense. So something bad happens, i have all of my files saved in the clouds/NAS so I simply re-image my machine, and import files from the NAS when I realize i need something.

Ontop of all that I have Malewarebytes cause, i dunno i was sold on it a long time ago and it hasnt pissed me off yet.

Microsoft security essentials. (Or is it just called windows defender now?)

Seamlessly integrated into windows, lightweight, free, better effectiveness than paid services.

Paying for AV... I am dissapoint.

As in recognizes more threats? Not the last time I saw some generic tests of different AVs.
Though I still recommend it, because I think getting a virus on your computer can mostly be avoided before it hits your harddisk with a bit of common sense.

Also don't use the USB stick / External HDD from people you don't trust to handle stuff like this. That includes my mother.
I always use my linux laptop for that.

This is a totally reasonable expectation to make of people and in no way will completely ruin the internet.

I guess noscript is acceptable to manage sites you trust but I cannot be assed to re-add them all.

It's rated quite poorly last I checked. Still better than nothing.

Does that qualify as 'technically correct'?

I feel this is a slippery slope.

No, because he said "better" not "as good as".

If the other results were down even 2% while it was up 2%, it'd be true.
