If this dude is trolling his technique is amazing.
If this dude isn't trolling his autism is amazing.

Either way this thread is amazing.

I'll go ahead and speak a little about about the VR field as I have been exposed to it a good amount the past few years beyond just the consumer side. At best it was a party trick. Neat for a bit, but it just is too far of a niche market. The best chance VR had was with gaming and as you can see, the gaming sector is floundering. Step outside of that to film/narrative experiences and it gets even worse. A lot worse. Companies are abandoning the VR experience left and right. Nokia not long ago peaced out and they had the OZO which was pretty good for capturing a VR experience at concerts, events and all kinds of stuff. It's simply too damn expensive to buy and maintain. Plus the amount of people who actually know how to do proper post production with it is almost nonexistent.

People simply don't like wearing a contraption on their face. The best you will get right now is where people hold a phone or tablet and then they look around where the image changes depending on the direction they are facing. Strap on some giant goggles that weigh a few pounds? Fuck that shit. And that is exactly what the consumers have expressed by slamming their wallets shut and moving on. So take all those things and put them together and you have a market that is dead/dying. The technology needs to get much better and not just on the capture side of things, but the end user experience technology needs to be vastly improved. You're still going to see some VR stuff doing it's best to not go gently into that good light, but it most certainly will go there. I'm sure it will try and make a comeback, but you need to give the people a breather before they consider trying it out again.

Now back to playing Mario Odyssey!

Sounds like ~100 staff affected in the "restructure" (although not sure all 100 have been actually let go) with ~30 of those coming from Reykjavik. CCP Manifest, CCP Logibro, CCP Leeloo, CCP Elvine (Sparc community guy) and CCP PearlJive (QA person) that I know of confirmed as leaving CCP.

Link. Hopefully the Google Translate link works.

[edit] CCP Frame (former Dust community guy turned producer based in Shanghai) also gone.

    Tinfoil hat time:

I've been doing the rounds on various social networks looking at who has done farewell updates and it seems to me that the layoffs are overwhelmingly in disciplines like PR, marketing and community - all things I'd assume a big publisher would have centralized staff for. I don't see many people in art, programming or design being shown the door, which would be needed to keep developing EVE for an in-house studio/publisher style relationship.

Newcastle is being shuttered and sold. Atlanta is gone. If someone was interested in just buying EVE the MMO and the staff to keep developing it, it would make sense to get all the redundant stuff that a big publisher would already have off the payroll.

And this from nearly a year ago: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...ter-approaches

    Tencent? Perfect World? EA?

    Place your bets.

EVE once was about internet spaceships. Then those became serious business.
Now all that is left is serious business, and spaceships are docked for two years till after the Dust of Incarna

Knowing CCP it's probably just dying with a whimper.

That sort of restructure can precede a few different strategic moves, either a big, visionary company expansion and they bring in new, specialised and very expensive marketing and PR teams. Eve's marketing has always been fairly amateur, so I wouldn't be surprised if they see it as an area which could yield good rewards with some decent investment. CCP could probably access a whole load of cash for such a venture and probably include a few acquisitions in it as well (snap up some fledgling mobile game platforms maybe), they have a good amount of revenue to leverage.

Or they're gearing up for sale, and CCP is a company which probably sell well. That's the more boring option though.

"I think we could all do with sitting back a bit and detaching ourselves from the situation to really think about how these issues reflect on our future and how we discuss them here and be a bit less aggressive or defensive because everyone has a complicated set of circumstances that has led the to place importance on particular issues and it doesn't meany any of them is less valid, we just need to look at the broader picture"

Just ask around people you know. It has the advantage that, if you change your mind in the future and ask them nicely enough, they may reverse the transaction.
