Moore said less than 10 pounds of material was placed in the chamber, far less than its safety rating.

So either the containment system failed in a way that put more power into the blast
or the put in way more than 10 pounds (maybe 100?)
or the explosives used in the home made china pyro was waaaaay more potent than advertised (which has other quite scary implications).

My bet's on a combination of the latter and containment equipment not handle properly, i.e. human error.

At 6 a.m., the water spread into a high-temperature solution in the alloy tank and caused a blast, said the statement.
Failures like this makes me doubt anyone who thinks we can just rebuild civilization in 5-10 years if a solar flare destroys the every power grid or similar infrastructure collapse.

The explosion triggered a fire that took several hours to put out. Plumes of black smoke were seen in the area.

Police have told local residents to stay inside and close windows and doors.

The cause of the blast at the Chempark waste incineration site is not yet known.
