PSA: Purge Your rescache, Get Space Back

As most of the regulars here can likely recall, one of the changes that CCP made this year was the relocation of EVE's assets from the client directory to a shared resource cache, while at the same time getting rid of STUFF archive files in favor of loose resource files (about 64K of them, at last count).

This also involved changing how CCP distributed and unpacked updates. Now CCP just sends over new files as necessary, and due to their versioning system replacement files rarely have the same name as the file they functionally replace.

However in CCP's infinite wisdom, they currently don't remove files the client doesn't need. Rather they simply keep them around until, I don't know, they get around to deciding to remove them through the launcher? As a result the cache can quickly stock up on extraneous files, to the tune of multiple gigabytes.

And here's where today's PSA comes in: the EVE client distribution comes with the tools necessary to get rid of these extraneous files, to purge the resource cache. Go to the EVE client directory and run rescache.exe purge, and watch as your HDD/SDD sheds gigabytes of weight. This will free up tons of space for My Little Pony, no, other games, Game of Thrones episodes.

Note: This assumes that you are only playing on TQ, and either have your launcher set to download all files, or you do download-on-demand with a single client only. Do not use this if you do DoD with multiple clients or if you're playing on Sisi, as it will purge the files those other clients are expecting

I just deleted everything and then let the client download stuff on-demand, instead of preloading.

23689 files removed, 5.7 GB saved

Also, if you have multiple EVE installs the way I do, you don't have to run this on every install. When the shared resource cache first went in, I got back something like 25-30 GB. So this is 5.7 GB in addition to that.

I was once Deemed Worthy To Wield The Banhammer, to good effect. Or at least, that's what most of EVE believes.

Which is why, as not entirely retarded programmers, they decided that handling retention policy of resource files could be done later.

Getting this feature out as soon as possible was a priority, and the cache won't grow that fast unless there's too many changes to the graphics assets...
