there are easier and safer ways to knock off somebody than spreading a cold-war era nerve agent around a city, what is even the intented message here ? "we've still got chemical weapons?"
Probably already had it in the country ready to go.

Business Insider admits a good pesticide factory with common chemicals could have made the nerve agent.

you can tell how weird things are about this when the daily mail comments on this story are generally; well we should be doing this too, and putin's just standing up for his country

presumably british people being cool about the fact that a chemical agent was used fairly loosely on british soil lmao

More than 10 but less than 15 years ago I did a CBRN assistant instructors course. Coverage of chemical agents was the bulk of the course but all we got about Novichoks was a 15 minute clip of a circa 1995 panorama report.

'Yeah lads, we don't even know if our detectors will pick this up or if your respirators and suits will filter it out.'

I would just like to take the opportunity to congratulate Russia on the US meddling thing, not just the election, but the whole thing. I'm not 100% sure where this whole killing of ex spies abroad thing is going, but im sure with all the messing about in other countries will pretty much prevent any real fallout.

Russia (Putin) is trying (actually doing pretty well so far) to prove that Russia has the biggest black cock in the international porno industry. Mostly, however, I think it's a bit of Argentine warfare strategy, i.e. distract from internal problems by conjuring up as much shit as possible externally.

So, basically, whole Russian policy for the last 500 years.

Yeah, but my understanding of the average Daily Mail commentator is that they barely have enough brain function to avoid committing incest, and possibly not even that.

... that's not entirely accurate, what it actually says is,

Vil Mirzayanov, 83, said he had no doubt that Russian President Vladimir Putin was responsible, given that Russia maintains tight control over its Novichok stockpile and that the agent is too complicated for a non-state actor to have weaponized.
That's Vil Mirzayanov, 83, a Russian chemist who helped develop the Soviet-era nerve agent family "Novichok" and is an authority on them in the West.

The article does include the statement:

The agent can be synthesized by mixing harmless compounds together. That made it easier for Russia to produce materials for Novichok under the cover of manufacturing agricultural chemicals, he said.
Which is a rather shoddy bit of writing in this Reuters/AP regurgitate. Most of anything can be "synthesized by mixing harmless compounds", that's chemistry. What it means is that chemical weapons can be and have been manufactured under cover of "agricultural products" because a lot of the ingredients and processes involved are linked to pesticide manufacture and relatively easy to disguise that way.

    Furthermore,

    No.

The World Cup is scheduled to run from mid-June to mid-July.

I'm talking specifically about unforeseen consequences that may be scheduled to occur in August.

As an aside, Russia seems obsessed with linking the Salisbury attack to their having the World Cup this year. It's bizarre, because it's basically a non-issue other than for their linking it.
