<3 Morrigi. Drone combat, best combat.
Damnit I'm going to have to find the time to play some classic SOTS I games now.
le bump
You guys might like to give this a try again, is quite enjoyable now. No UI lag anymore being the main good fix - no longer feels like wading through treacle.
Picked full game + 2 dlcs up for 10 euros today (lulz).
Game is still shit;
Switching between some menus often takes over 5 seconds.
Occasionally the music will lock up while the game is trying to open some random menu.
Interface becomes completely unresponsive while handling ai turns.
Button response varies between good and not at all.
Game crashed twice during 4 hours of play.
The ai looks pretty retarded on medium difficulty.
The fleet system is cluttered, serves no purpose and is a step down from Sots1.
The interface is (and looks) terrible, they tried to make it look pretty but now it shows no fucking info at all and still looks shit.
The music is terrible.
The manual is terrible.
Space battles are pretty though.
Not sure why everyone here appears to have a lagless interface and i dont, steam says i've got the latest version
Ill stick to sots 1 for now.

The game is working fairly well for me except for the fact the game slows drastically down around turn 150-200 if I have more than 2 players. We are talking like 1-2 minute delays between pressing end turn and the next turn starting
Massively reduces the fun for me.
Tbh im not even looking to design ships or anything that heavy, just being able to browse the stats of my planets would be enough for me. Since the game locks up completely while processing turns im sitting here doing nothing.
Also fhc logged me out for no reason and i noticed this post. Will be trying this later to see if it still works. The music is fucking ear rape anyway.
installed SotS 1 again ...
i usually go for beam weapons as i prefer morrigi/liir (i like the quick-expand/turtle to hi-tech style :P ) ... but after i got roflstomped in one of the matches where i had phaser cruisers with shield mk3 vs. a shitload of liir cruisers with dread support and fusion projectors i decided for myself: never again. no more turtling at a "decent" size, constant expansion is the goal. but this also means: diverting ressources from economic techs (which i dislike a bit) and constantly upgrading weapons.
and then fell my eye on the ballistic tree ... i usually go this tree only when playing tarka/hivers ... (PDS excluded .. that's always useful) ... i have to admit heavy AP drivers are quite potent considering the low investment in RP .. even for the "hi-tech" races.
and then i tried impactors.
with advanced sensors.
and ai fire control.
that shit is hilarious. now i feel retarded for never trying them before.
I want to play this, but it is supposedly borked, should I buy it?
Playing this a lot right now, is very enjoyable.
AI still seems pretty bad tho, so handicap yourself at start for more fun. Zuul slaving seems horribly overpowered: after dropping off a load of slaves it seems your civilian zuul use these for feeding purposes. However the "pop boost" bonus seems broken, so 300 million slaves -> 8 billion civilions. Yes I have 8+ billion civilians on a size 4 planet here... This one world can produce something like 50 trade goods, and is giving income (not incl trade) of 2.2 million - out of an empire total of 6.5 million. Bug only seems to strike the planet where you drop the slaves off. One very cool feature is Zuul trade distrubutes the slaves around your empire.
Suul'Ka seem pretty useless in combat, aside from their ability to teleport fleets across the galaxy. I think many of their psi powers are bugged, and crushing stuff with tentacles is unreliable.
Also - Disruptor Whips = omgwtf. Another overpowered tactical module is the Barrage section with polaris missiles. This game really is all about missiles, build a fleet of barrage cruisers and kite enemy across map. I did have the Zuul capture Sol on the SotsVerse map but turns were taking over 2 minutes a pop
Yes there is also still a lurking UI lag bug, but it only shows up later in the game. Also it goes away if you restart.... Aside from that the game is very playable and enjoyable.
Recommended starting settings for fun:
6 players on Brawl map, give the AI 9 startins colonies, give yourself 5. Give everyone lots of starting techs. Instant action! Don't pick the larger maps until they fix slowdowns tbh - will induce rage.

They won't fix slowdowns. AI fights in the same battle simulator as player's autoresolve, and as number of battles grows, turn times grows with them.
Slowdown is coz of bugs, not just the amount of stuff happening.
Big save on SotsVerse: can take ages to resolve turn, also horrible UI lag - takes 10+ seconds to return to main screen. Reload game, UI lag goes away, turn lag is a lot less. Horrible lag return next turn.
Also the autoresolve is a load of shit and needs fixing, it gives completely different results from manual battle. And no I'm not talking about manual use of superior tactics either... Point Defense seems to do nothing in autoresolve, every missile hits. This is just one example.
So Erinys just unlocked the Lore forum again and there's a wealth of new goodies in there. I'm currently reading the profiles on all seven Suul'ka.
There's pictures too. Eldest is literally an armored skeleton. Bloodweaver has towers and domes on its back like barnacles, for its coterie of Zuul Heralds to live in communion with their god.
Also, apparently it's common for Liir crewmen to develop serious psychological problems after seeing too much of the wrong kinds of action - assault shuttle pilots for example, being exposed to fear and rage and death of civilian populations at close range. Zuul having the ability to extract memories psionically, there exist dedicated "Sin Eaters" among the Prester Zuul who basically act as confessors.
