Sure, but unless you've got a TV to match, is it surprising you'd need to swap the resolution?
Totally not Victoria Stecker forgetting his password and not having access to his work email.

This. At best what you'd get is horrible bars covering half the screen.

I think they want to host to automatically adjust itself to the target / client resolution.

    resolution =/= aspect ratio

I can't get most games to reliably detect my primary monitor half the time, I'm not going to expect them to recognize a steam link/tv.

I wouldn't mind black bars, instead of just all black screen.

I honestly expected Steam Link to work differently.
Didn't think it would actually run the game on PC and stream image to TV.
Thought the game would run in the background, and let the PC do the heavy lifting and just beam the image to TV.

    That's... what it's doing?

what do you think streaming is

The PC /is/ doing the heavy lifting and it is being beamed to the TV

    W... what?

Wait, i might be getting it, are you thinking of it as if you are changing 'output device' on your pc and it would show that on the link?

Right so, what we think you're saying is

you expected the steam link to detect your TV as though it was another monitor and just output it to that resolution natively, instead of outputting it on your PC monitor and then streaming that to the TV?

Yes. That's how I thought it would work.

If you want that then just get an extra long HDMI/Displayport cable and hook your TV up directly

tl:dr wifi isn't as fast as a physical connection so outputting directly to the TV without encoding/decoding isn't feasible (yet)

Actually a Chromecast does more than a Steam Link does. If you start e.g. a Youtube video on a Chromecast, it will connect to Youtube itself and download the stream without additional intervention of the device you gave the command to (your phone). You can even wander off or shut down your phone, and the video will continue to play on the Chromecast.

All the Steam Link does is display an in-home video stream and route input back if you have the input connected to the Steam Link. If you're within range it's a better idea to connect the input directly to the PC, as that saves you some lag.

Yeah, except good luck easily getting all the peripherals hooked up easily.

Eh, not a big deal when using a wireless controller like the Steam Controller. Well except if you have to go through multiple walls of course.
