    Is the Tesla Car on it's way to mars? Or just dangling around near Earth orbit?

    It will be. The Roadster is in a heliocentric (sun-centered), hyperbolic elliptic (an oval instead of a circle) orbit that takes it between .98 AUs (1AU, or Astronomical Unit, is defined as the average orbital distance of the Earth from the sun) at perigee ("lowest altitude") and 2.61 AUs at apogee ("highest altitude").

    So do we have exact information on whats in the payload along with the car?

    If its got some thrusters and a parachute, that would be hilarious.

    In Elon's words, "it's just a car." They didn't really do anything to make it space-worthy, they just bolted it onto the Second Stage payload adapter and added some camera booms, transmitters, and Go-Pros.

    No parachute, it's supposed to stay in space until the sun swallows it.

    And if anyone wondered how you can find teapots in space in Stellaris, that's how.

    It'll head back to some "altitude" from the sun equivalent to the earth's (or nearly), but not at the same time as the earth.

    It's not hyperbolic. A hyperbolic orbit is an escape trajectory, more precisely it is one with a positive specific energy.

    They added a plaque with all the spaceX employee names that worked on it. That basically means they have the longest enduring memorial to mankind, inside the solar system, if the max lifespan of a billion years is anything to go by.

    The "billion years" figure comes from an estimate that there was* a nonzero-but-still-practically-zero chance of hitting mars in about a billion years time, at which point the models become so unreliable they're useless. In all probability it'll continue out there forever.

    *The orbit it's in now is not the original one proposed.

    Whoops - I meant elliptic.

    Shamelessly stolen from reddit, because good. That was before the first FH testfire.
    https://www.reddit.com/r/spacex/comm...dates/dsuxjar/

    Like The Raven you say?

    Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,

    Over many a quaint and curious pages of r/spacex lore—

    While I nodded, barely clicking, suddenly there came a tickling,

    As of something gently prickling, prickling from head to the floor.

    “’Tis some wishful thought,” I muttered, “from the NET the day before—

    Only this and nothing more.”

    Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the sixth December;

    And each separate core had finished refurb from the flight before.

    Eagerly I wished the morrow;—vainly I had sought to follow

    From my twitter feed so hollow—news of GSE that bore —

    The rare and radiant rocket named not for her triple core—

    Named the Heavy here for evermore.

    And the eager, giddy, pressing of each F5 keystroke testing

    Thrilled me-filled me with hope for a rocket never flown before

    So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating

    “’Tis some wishful thought impeding on my sleep again– no more—

    Some vain hope of static fire and a 6 month NET no more—

    This it is and nothing more.”

    Presently the static date rolled, as the FD polled and re-polled

    Each and every engineer upon the countdown net

    But the fact is I was clicking, and so gently came a tickling

    And so faintly came a prickling, prickling from my head to toe

    That I feared that I had missed it – here I refreshed three times more-

    Pad 39A – nothing more.

    Deep into that image peering, long I sat there wondering, fearing,

    Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;

    But the image was unbroken, and the pixels gave no token,

    And the only words there spoken were the words, “Six months no more?”

    This I whispered, and an echo back the words, “Six months no more!”—

    Static image and nothing more.*

    Back onto the forum turning, all my soul within me burning,

    Soon again I started clicking somewhat louder than before.

    “Surely,” said I, “surely that is something in my reddit feed;

    Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore—

    Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore;—

    ’Tis a promo and nothing more!”

    Open here they flung the HIF door, when, with many a flash and shutter,

    Up there rolled a stately rocket unlike any from the days of yore

    Not the least obeisance made she; not a minute stopped or stayed she;

    But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above the flame trench floor—

    Perched upon a gleaming TE just above the flame trench floor—

    Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

    To be continued (on further FH developments).......

    Actually its space peoplekind now
    "I think we could all do with sitting back a bit and detaching ourselves from the situation to really think about how these issues reflect on our future and how we discuss them here and be a bit less aggressive or defensive because everyone has a complicated set of circumstances that has led the to place importance on particular issues and it doesn't meany any of them is less valid, we just need to look at the broader picture"

    Lol! I didnt get that, I was wondering wtf that tweet talked about.

    Meh, I was expecting Tesla satellite or even more so maybe, a glorious impact on the surface.

    That would have been pretty shitty since they didn't sterilise the car. People involved in contamination studies are furious that it's in space in the first place, putting Earth bacteria on Mars would give them heart attacks.

    It would be pretty dumb too

    That's the reason that satellites and spacecraft are built in cleanrooms

    Satellites are built in clean-rooms because of "sensitive microelectronics". Planetary probes that land places are build in extra clean rooms to prevent potential contamination, but I'm fairly certain only NASA and ESA care about that. I doubt USSR ever gave a shit, similar for Chinese and Indian probes today.
