Incarceration is a rarely a good solution to crime and should be treated as a last resort in general. Sadly, "lock em up" is one of those overly simplistic solutions that people seem to flock to.

Many in the U.S. have a hard time with more progressive systems. They have trouble seeing a person commit a crime, and get something they see as "good" out of it, as opposed to something bad i.e. punishment.
It can be shown that say, giving an offender classes and some fiscal aid, and not incarcerating them at all, may be the "best" method......but it'll be very difficult to get Americans to accept that the result of their car being stolen or their friend being beaten should be the offender gets free school, some cash and a stern talking to about not doing it again.
It's not that surprising, it goes hand in hand with the right-leaning policies of poor worker protections and extremely limited welfare/benefit systems, which typically cut your nose off to spite your face when it comes to things like crime rates and economic performance.
The root problem will always be the conditions of the prisons.
It creates a barbaric mindset where long term planning and executive thinking are amputated entirely. Someone who spends a few years in one of these shitholes has spent all their time trying to avoid being a victim. Naturally someone with these impulses will end up failing in the outside world.
Imagine if we didn't have millions of unproductive or damaged people. Untreated mental illness, addiction, never taught how to function in the real world, etc. This is a system that thinks its preserving itself, when all its been doing is dragging itself down.

I think we should go back to putting people back in a stockade, or public whipping for minor crimes tbh.

Incarceration should be used as a punishment for violent crimes or crimes that endanger society.
We need to cancel the War on Drugs. Also, no true conservative would support the privatization of prisons. Taking away rights enshrined in our Constitution should be limited to state organizations only. Fucking disgusting.
Their parents should have thought about it before they got caught
