I hate replying to a rak post, but I do have to point out that when Democrats get caught in sexually embarrassing situations, it's a big deal and Republicans go batshit insane over it. But when Republicans get caught, somehow it's more acceptable.

Makes you think. I mean, why else would they have tried to crucify Clinton for lying about a hummer, but varying GOP leaders since then, including a sitting POTUS were allowed to do worse?

Do you have some examples? Perhaps someone voted out of office for their sex acts, as an example?

Makes you think. I mean, why else would they have tried to crucify Clinton for lying about a hummer, but varying GOP leaders since then, including a sitting POTUS were allowed to do worse?
Because he lied under oath and political gain could be made from that.

Given how many posts we've had about lying under oath being an impeachable offense since Trump/Sessions took over, I think you'd see thats something both sides will use if and when available.

If all Bill had done was admit to getting a hummer, Republicans would have carped as usual, but nothing whatsoever would have come of it. Same way nothing came of Clinton admitting he smoked up, and nothing came of Obama admitting he did coke.

Bill was also an accused serial abuser of women on par with Bill Cosby minus the drugs. Yet even today he is likely our most popular living ex-President. It was the lie under oath that got him in trouble, not the sex act itself.

Something Trump and his friends should keep in mind when the time inevitably comes.

US poverty rate falls again as median income rises

    Reuters

The U.S. poverty rate fell for the second straight year in 2016 to 12.7 percent, while median income rose to $59,000 in 2016 from $57,200 a year earlier, according to federal government data released Tuesday.

More than 40.6 million people in the United States were living in poverty last year, 2.5 million fewer than in 2015 and 6.0 million fewer than in 2014, the U.S. Census Bureau said in its annual report on income, poverty and health insurance coverage.

The 12.7 percent poverty rate represented a decrease of 0.8 percentage points from 13.5 percent in 2015, it said.

"This is the second consecutive annual decline in poverty," the bureau said.

The U.S. poverty rate varies depending on household. In 2016, a family of four with two adults and two children with a household income of $24,339 or less, two adults under age 65 with $16,543 or less, or someone aged 65 or older with $11,511 in annual income would all meet the poverty threshold, according to Census.

The bureau said the 2016 poverty rate was not significantly higher than the 12.5 percent poverty rate in 2007, the year before the most recent U.S. recession.

The number of poor decreased for most demographic groups with the exception of adults over 65 years old, the only population group that posted an increase in the number living in poverty, it added.

Additionally, the supplemental poverty measure was 13.9 percent, it said. That metric factors in various expenses and regional differences in the cost of living as well as the support the poor might receive from government programs.

Median household income, meanwhile, rose to $59,039 in 2016, a 3.2 percent increase from 2015 and the second consecutive annual increase in the category, the Census Bureau said.

The bureau also said 28.1 million people in the United States, or 8.8 percent, lacked health insurance coverage in 2016 compared with 29 million, or 9.1 percent, in 2015.

Yeah sure, John Edwards and Anthony Wiener springs immediatly to mind. The first one because he was a presidential candidate (or was it vice president?) and the second one for the hilarity.

Meanwhile that saggy pos Newt Gingrich is still clinging in the limelight refusing to wither and die in the shadows.

Is this 'retarded situation' top trumps?

It's a fucking disgrace in any developed country.

They do also measure them differently, quickly looking at it the UK one is predictably much more demanding than the US one from what I see quickly on google.

    So yeah, lolus.

Well it is and it isn't.. The agreed poverty line in most countries is usually significantly higher than 'has enough money to survive' and includes people that can eat and afford rent but not much else (ie, no disposable income). If these people ended up with more money then the poverty line would go up because they are still pore people and so you end up with it being about 12% all of the fucking time. There are ways to fix it but not in a free market because where do you think rich people get their money from...

Poverty != Living on the streets starving to death

That was my point.. Its a line that people make up and they like to keep the definition so that the lowest x% (on a global scale) are below it. That means that no matter how well your system works there will always be a percentage of people below this line because the definition of the line is x% below that line.. Some countries have a lower % than others because generally they do better at keeping people on their feet, some do a lot worse.. on a global scale 12% isn't actually that bad (given that it can literally never be 0% because of how its measured).

No I know what you mean, and no I don't mean people living on the streets either.

But surely we should be hoping that in developed countries people should at least not have active trouble surviving at a basic level eventually and living all around shit lives even when fully employed etc. Which they are.

It's true that the %s mean fuck all because of how they're counted (and why the USA is low, because according to my short Google their threshold for poverty is kind of low compared to some others) though.

It's probably worth mentioning that the poverty rate in the US has basically been flat between 11 and 15% since the 70s, after it came down from present U.K. levels (22%) in the early 60s.
