The US has agreed not to repeat claims the UK's communications intelligence agency wiretapped Donald Trump during the presidential election campaign.
GCHQ rejected allegations made by White House press secretary Sean Spicer, that it spied on Mr Trump, as "nonsense".
No 10 has now been assured by Mr Spicer he would not repeat the accusation.
A spokesman for Prime Minister Theresa May said it had been made clear to US authorities the claims were "ridiculous and should have been ignored".
GCHQ also rejected the allegations as "utterly ridiculous". The unusual move by the agency to comment on the news came after Mr Spicer cited claims first made on US TV channel Fox News earlier this week.
Mr Trump said that Trump Tower in New York was under surveillance, but has provided no evidence for the claim.
The allegations of GCHQ involvement were initially made by former judge Andrew Napolitano.
Mr Spicer quoted Mr Napolitano as saying: "Three intelligence sources have informed Fox News that President Obama went outside the chain of command."

He said Mr Obama "didn't use the NSA, he didn't use the CIA, he didn't use the FBI and he didn't use the Department of Justice, he used GCHQ.
"What the heck is GCHQ? That's the initials for the British spying agency. They have 24/7 access to the NSA database."
A GCHQ spokesman said: "Recent allegations made by media commentator Judge Andrew Napolitano about GCHQ being asked to conduct 'wiretapping' against the then president-elect are nonsense.
"They are utterly ridiculous and should be ignored."

I've gotta say, the White House are so desperate in trying to put out the wiretapping-claim-fire that they're trying to light more fires (blaming others or trying to find excuses that sound reasonable enough but cannot be confirmed) just to divert media-attention-oxygen in the hope the wiretapping will die. Too bad they managed to piss of an ally who didn't want to play that game and look like absolute idiots while doing so, and get Congress even more riled up about it.
but like, why gchq? pick some shit ally like croatia or something and blame them. but no, blame the closest allies the americans have. beyond mental.
Because GCHQ are part of the Five Eyes and thus have access and history of being used for this kind of circumvention of the FISA court.

British intelligence services can access raw material collected in bulk by the NSA and other foreign spy agencies without a warrant, the government has confirmed for the first time.

    ...

The group also said information obtained through these overseas “arrangements” was treated as if it were targeted surveillance, removing a requirement under UK law not to search for UK citizens and residents in such data troves. This means that British citizens could, in theory, be subject to warrantless monitoring by GCHQ.
    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...a-surveillance

The Americans were given guidelines for its use, but were told in legal briefings by GCHQ lawyers: "We have a light oversight regime compared with the US".

When it came to judging the necessity and proportionality of what they were allowed to look for, would-be American users were told it was "your call".

The Guardian understands that a total of 850,000 NSA employees and US private contractors with top secret clearance had access to GCHQ databases.

There are more out there that discuss the loophole in more detail.

They can't afford it here, mostly. They end up in like Norh Dakota and other places where it snows. I certainly can't afford a view of that and I'm doing ok...

The "The US has agreed not to repeat claims the UK's communications intelligence agency wiretapped Donald Trump during the presidential election campaign." part didn't even last long. In an answer to a question about that issue Trump made a remark during the press conference with Merkel that "(we) both have something in common", clearly referring to the wiretapping of Merkel's cell phone during the Obama presidency.

That was a promise not to blame GCHQ, not the wiretapping in general.

Rak, you're implying that GCHQ didn't 'wiretap' Merkel.

If we apply your usual standards: it's clear that he was referring to the well known fact that GCHQ wiretaps everyone with a phone.

No, I'm implying that Trump talked about wiretapping by the Five Eyes in general, not GCHQ specifically which the WH promised not to do.

Edit: Also what I can find mentions the NSA, not GCHQ, though that might just be a detail they got wrong.

Apologies, my joke went way over your head.

I'm saying that in this case you're actually correct: Trump didn't explicitly break his promise to Britain. However, we're told constantly not to believe the actual words Trump says but rather whatever he wants them to mean. By which standard, I'm certain he just said 'Fuck You Poms'.
