I'll make him feel better. I still don't like those stupid fidgety shitty metro apps. They have no place on a desktop. On a laptop (with a touch screen) or tablet they are a little easier to use but the vast majority of them are utter shit. I hope you can just remove them all (like you can in 8.1)

VirtualBox and windows 10 64 apparently doesn't like each other, at least not in my desktop.
Anyone have better luck? Don't really feel like upgrading my current 8.1, or do games and stuff work?

    Use Hyper-V in 8.1.

I had success running it in vmware player. Games seemed to be fine, but I strongly recommend against doing steam in-home streaming to a vm.

Will definitely get win 10, it's nice.

behave yourselves, win10 preview "views" everything you do and reports to Redmond (aka keylogger)
Just don't use the Win 10 preview to watch your porn or post on FHC...

(I've already seen people whining about 10 being a free upgrade if you own 8/8.1 - seriously)
TBH this shouldn't be about bashing microsoft, it should be about bashing the win8 fans who will shortly end up looking like vista fans.

People defending a shitty OS by saying things like "you get used to it" and suggesting we'll all be using it anyway someday. Hope you liked using that junker.
No, it should be about bashing the idiots that suddenly love features that they previously hated when they are put under a new name and given some lipstick. I.e. the vista sucks, 7 is great crowd.
Name a feature that whoever you're talking about previously hated and now love. I can't seem to understand what you're talking about.

Same with Vista. Win 7 is just Vista with a lot less terrible design decisions.
Yeah... the debate went something like this: Every other windows version sucks, some people said avoid it until they make it not suck. And every time it happened, it was true. And every time it happened, some adopters had some cognitive dissonance going on where they denied what was happening.

I guess "championing the stick in the mud crowd" means I understand why 7 is so popular, and why 10 will be.

There are no different design decisions in 7 than in Vista. Its the same OS with a slightly different skin and a new name. Its barely a service pack.

The only intentional design change I know about was making the UAC less noisy, which was a pretty big complaint when vista came out.

And there was a big debacle regarding selling 'vista capable' computers that were anything but. Vista's probably the weakest example of the trend because its failures were largely due to circumstance, but the result was a lot of bad user experiences switching ahead when they were better off not doing so. 7 felt mature when it came out whereas a lot of people were better off ignoring hype and press releases to avoid Vista completely.

Nope win 8.1 other than UI is a much better OS, you can feel comfortable not having to fight your PC to find things but you should feel sad about missing out on the good stuff.

I wonder what design changes would be made if they enabled the monitoring from win 10 silently to win7/8 to see what PC's are actually used for, optimised for cat vid's facebook and porn?

the 8.1 is a better os if you ignore the way you interact with it.

The problem is that's exactly true. If you think its a good thing then you like the features (except the UI) and if you think its a bad thing then you hate the UI enough to forgo the features, but in either case its still true.

For me, the 8.1 interface is mildly better than the 8.0 interface but still a long way behind the 7 interface. For deaktops its Win7 all the way, for servers however where I don't actually have to interact with them very often (and even when I do its for things like scripting) its Server 2012 R2 all the way (its got the 8.1 interface). I love the extras 2012 R2 given you (I like powershell 4 for example) and as I dont have to do most of my work on it the interface is pretty much a non issue (I like the new server manager)

For me it wasn't simply the interface, I could've lived with that, but the fact that the Windows 8 bsod said exactly fuck all about what went wrong. Considering I like to overclock my components, I noticed that Win8 crashed and burned with BSODs whilst my Windows 7 installation was rock solid at the same frequency. Thus, it was completely no-go for me to keep it.

Not an argument considering Win 8.1 has significant perfomance improvements over Win 7. You wont find a single serious overclocker using Win 7 these days because its objectively worse in terms of performance, especially when you get to SLI and CFX use. To put it into perspective just how much difference there is, i gained 30% performance across the board, not just in benchmarks with both 7970 CFX and 980 SLI when comparing win 7 to win 8.1.

You can argue that the bluescreen doesnt give you enough info but if you are overclocking then the info on the bluescreen is completely irrelevant anyway as you should already know whats causing the instability.

Also if you crash on the same settings then your OC wasnt a stable OC in the first place. Win 7 is not more forgiving in that regard, thats entirely on you.
