    VLC for player?
I usually use DVD Decrypter, it helps with protected DVDs (there are some out there, quite a lot actually), then I do encoding with Handbrake from the ISO. Unfortunately I don't know any Linux alternatives.
Apparently handrake can get by with a little help from it's friends: https://www.howtogeek.com/102886/how...-can-rip-them/

I've ripped my entire dvd collection to my Plex library using handbrake on Linux. Fried 3 dvd drives in the process

Nice, how many DVD's did each drive last?

I have some 400 DVD's collecting dust that I probably should sort out.

That would take about 2TB to archive, right? It's a good hangover sunday job.

Perhaps 100? Two of the drives were used though, and the third isn't really fried, its just the latching mechanism that is busted, so i have to use elastic to hold it shut :\

    I'd recommend not using a Athlon 5350...

I used to use two drives at once, as you can queue several jobs. Most of the hassle is typing in the info, and getting it to save the subtitle track and stuff like that.

Really annoying when the default audio isn't what you'd expect. I ripped a bunch of my GFs "Sex And the City" [...] DVDs in french.

Ripping my dvd library was a similarly painful experience. My biggest piece of advice is to start with one dvd and make sure you have damn fucking happy with the settings and everything is doing what you want because if you have to remux it, its just as big of a pain in the ass.

I hadn't realized that I was hardcoding(i forget the right term but that seems right) the sub titles in...

Burned in is another term for it. And yeah, things like turning on interpolation for older shows really makes a difference, start with the first chapter of the first episode to get the settings right, nevermind one whole disc.

Now I need to see if I have any optical drive collecting dust.

Can you rip a R1 disc on a R2 drive btw? I'm certain the multiregion drive I had died a long time ago.

I'm p. sure the utility doing the ripping should pleasantly ignore region lock.

I will give it a try, I just remembered I have an old laptop with a DVD drive that still should work.

Curious if they do decrypt the DVDs as well. I've been quietly contemplating running Linux as my main OS for a while now (probably pass thru a GPU for gaming on a virtualized Windows OS and use another card for the base system), but I keep slowly gathering info about stuff I don't want to lose in flexibility ^^

If it's an old laptop, you might be better off sharing the drive over your network, so that you can run the ripping on a faster computer.

I will try one disc and see how it looks like on a 65" screen, I have pretty much migrated away from SD content, even HD is borderline except when UHD isn't an option.

I need to go through the boxes and see what I haven't got in better quality already.

I ripped a bunch of DVDs for my dad and I have to say SD looks really weird on LCD screens, the bigger the screen the more odd it seems.

    I'm using a 27inch monitor as a TV, so I'm not spoiled.

I remember converting some VHS tapes two years ago. Hard to believe I spent my youth watching that.

I actually still have some tapes laying around but my VCR is in shambles and needs probably recapping top to bottom so I save it for a really really bad weather day
