This has been going on enough to get it's own thread.
http://www.theguardian.com/world/201...lice--violenceA day of anger over a fatal police shooting of an unarmed black man in suburban St Louis turned to mayhem as people looted businesses, vandalized vehicles and confronted police in riot gear who tried to block access to parts of the city.
The police get out all their fancy toys the government sells them cheap.
And then start arresting journalists and banning all the TV trucks from the city. There are reports of the al jezeera news crew being fired upon as they were recording a piece to air.
http://www.theguardian.com/world/201...brown-shootingTwo reporters were arrested and teargas was fired at demonstrators in Ferguson, Missouri, on Wednesday, five nights after an unarmed black teenager was shot dead by an officer from the town’s predominantly white police force.
(This next one is an amazing picture. Also, count the black people)
The response to this is a hands raised protest.
The most interesting part of this to me, aside from people in Gaza using twitter to advise americans how to cope with teargas, is the militarisation of the police.
http://www.citylab.com/crime/2014/08...uburbs/375855/According to a public information officer with the St. Louis County Police Department, the county dispatched two armored vehicles on Saturday in response to "unrest." Yet it was not until Sunday that some grieving community members answered perceived injustice with violence, looting about a dozen shops. As of Saturday, when the BearCat took to the streets of Ferguson (population 21,000), protesters were assembling peacefully.
I can't get a clear idea of the timeline, it's been going for a week but as people only notice when it goes bad I guess it's possible the police provoked the rioting by responding to a protest with a BearCat?
