yes, let's have another war with dark skinned people over a ocean of sand, rock and desert heat.

the last two went so well didn't they ?
    Viking, n.:
    1. Daring Scandinavian seafarers, explorers, adventurers, entrepreneurs world-famous for their aggressive, nautical import business, highly leveraged takeovers and blue eyes.
    2. Bloodthirsty sea pirates who ravaged northern Europe beginning in the 9th century.

Hagar's note: The first definition is much preferred; the second is used only by malcontents, the envious, and disgruntled owners of waterfront property.

Well to be fair it wasn't just ISIS that fucked up Iraq. They're just the latest and greatest cockup. Though they outclassed the rest of the assholes that like to bomb markets and schools by leveling an entire village... Or was it a city?

So here is the deal: WWI ends. Treaty of Versailles divides up the Ottoman Empire. Now the new European overlords need to keep their new conquests under control. First thing they do is drawn lines in the sand that divide up ethnic groups across several different countries. A well known example of this is the Kurds which span Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Iran, etc. The second trick is to put the minority in power. You saw this with the Sunni ruling the Shiite majority Iraq under Saddam and Currently with Bashar Al-Assad, part of the Alawite ruling minority, in Syria. The idea is that The minority would rulers would do whatever it took to keep the majority in place because if they failed they would likely face genocide. (One of the fears some well versed people have is that the Alawite's would be massacred if Assad loses.)

Lo and behold USA and friends kick the crap out of Iraq in 2003. Iraq was supposed to be easy. Invade, do some nation building, drop the patented "made in the USA" democracy in a box in a land that hasn't ever had true democracy and everything would go well. The issue is the minority Sunni, who had ruled Iraq for many years, realized democracy sucked for them because there is the golden rule of democracy: Majority wins. Which means the Shiites could easily win the elections, form a government, and give the middle finger to the Sunni. Which is exactly what happened. Malaki's Government is not based upon power sharing and doesn't care about anyone but Shiiites.

So what were the Sunni to do now that they had a government that didn't care about them? Fight of course. They couldn't beat USA and friends in Iraq. By the time they realized this and were giving up Syria kicked off. So where do the fighters go? To the place they can win. So off they went to Syria. Like all destabilized nations facing a civil war all the civilians care about is security, food, water, and shelter. You can be as nasty as you want (1990's Taliban in Afghanistan, ISIS now) so long as you give civilians those four things. If you provide those four things to one area people in the neighboring areas are going to welcome you when you get there. It happened all over 1990's Afghanistan when the Taliban showed up. As your group become successful you attract more followers. It isn't surprising that ISIS has a lot of territory under their control and enough fighters to keep claiming territory. Especially in places with Sunni majority like western Iraq who would rather be under ISIS than Malaki.

When will ISIS end? Potentially never. Despite USA and friends efforts we still haven't killed off the Taliban in the last 13 years because of their safe havens in Pakistan and the Pakistan Gov hiding/protecting their leaders. As long as ISIS can hide in Syria they will keep going. It doesn't help that Iraq's Government is in disarray and completely ineffective because "majority wins" democracy means the Shia don't have to power share with the Sunni or Kurds. No effective Government means no effective armed forces. Sooner or later ISIS will piss off someone who can kick the daylights out of them (USA and friends, Turkey, Iran, etc) and they are going to light up ISIS. But they won't be destroyed unless there is capable ground forces to hold the territory cleared by airstrikes. Which means Iraq needs to get it together.

Of course all of this is mearly a proxy war between Sunni and Shia. Well... More so between Saudi Arabia (Rich Sunni majority who have no problem funding terrorist organizations like Al-Qaeda or ISIS) and Iran (Well funded military. Majority Shia. Propping up Baghdad and Assad) Think Cold War between USA and USSR. Neither side wants to start shooting the other, but they will gladly fund/supply wars. If either Saudi Arabia or Iran get's heavily involved I have think it is possible the other one will be involved and we may see a full blown Sunni-Shia war.

That must be the first time even the most hardcore german leftis are supporting the US dropping some freedom loads. Or nuking them. If leftis cry for war they are pretty radical it seems.
When I see a bird that walks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck id call it a duck.
And if the bird denies to be a duck it is a russian duck.

Apparently F-18s dropped two 500 pound bombs on an ISIS artillery piece. TBH it'll probably be a refreshing change of pace to drop bombs on crazy religious fanatics that aren't blended in with the local population for once.
