Maybe the prison system is in crisis and acts as a radicalisation tool?
Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves for slaughter.

    Why not both?
Reintegration/rehabilitation take time and effort and the prison system barely has the resources to cover the basic management of the prisons, even with most "guests" serving half-terms.

Meanwhile the strongman of the moment keeps changing things up so they can claim to be tough in the eyes of their loyal sheep voters, without any regard to the practicalities or funding of those changes.

Yeah it is both, my post was more of an analysis of the first. Early release and reintegration could work if there was an attempt to even bother with the 'reintegration' aspect of it. The problems don't suddenly go away because we lock them up for a bit longer or give up on reintegration.

As it is you lock up a load of people with similar extremist views, pay G4S to give them a few hours of 'de-radicalisation' bollocks over a several year sentence and then let them back into the public if they pinky promise to be good. It is a tick box cost saving exercise which endangers lives.

only sort of early release system they should be up for is the pinochet system of letting them out of helicopters before they have landed.

Shamima Begum loses first stage of appeal over citizenship

Shamima Begum has lost the first stage of her appeal against the government's decision to remove her UK citizenship.

Ms Begum, now 20, left London in 2015, aged 15, to join Islamic State. She was found in a Syrian refugee camp in February 2019.

Former Home Secretary Sajid Javid stripped her of her UK citizenship later that month.

A tribunal ruled that Ms Begum could be stripped of her nationality because she had not been left stateless.

The Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC), a semi-secret court which hears national security cases, said she could instead turn to Bangladesh for citizenship.
She apparantly has a 'claim' to Bangladeshi citizenship by descent but Bangladesh have basically fucked her off.

Not sure if I'm ok with the precedent this sets.

It's an atrocity and it's only going to get worse. Stripping her of her nationality is enormously popular with the British public and public support is the only currency worth having right now so buckle up.

It will go to appeal, no precedent yet. I don’t think any tribunal would’ve touched that with a barge pole: they probably felt it was best to let the CoA sort it out/effectively defer making a decision.

Just curious about the escalation process from here on in... CoA is the next step and from then the Supreme court?

Stripping someone of a citizenship should only ever happen if they already have another citizenship.

Being stateless is incredibly difficult, worse than having an almost useless citizenship like Afghanistan with visa requirements for pretty much every country.

@Lark: IIRC the Supreme Court is the highest step and the one above the court of appeals.

Sharp rise in brain injuries from Iran raid on US base

The number of US troops suffering from traumatic brain injuries (TBI) after an Iranian attack on a US base in Iraq in January has risen to 109, according to US officials.

The figure is a significant increase from the 64 injured service members previously reported by the Pentagon.

Out of curiosity, have some pics of that?
