This. The Turkish army is way more professional than any of the Arab armies.

Rather I'd wager that they doctrinal use isn't up to the task at hand.

Before or after they purged about half the officer corps from the army?
I suspect that they are making exactly the same error the Saudis made in Yemen. Resupply over rugged terrain is hard and requires effort to keep the supply columns save. Tanks fill in for artillery/air support so they need to carry a lot of shells, far more than the bustle intended to stop the whole tank blowing up on a hit can hold.

So rather than play it save and have to drive back to resupply constantly, you stack ammo in the turret, get hit, and go up like the 4th of July.
    So complacency kills? (Non-shocker)

Yup. The leopard is designed from the ground up with compartmentalisation in mind, so in theory a cookoff shouldn't be as lethal as shown in the video. Unless as Maximillian mentioned, they stored ammo outside the ammo compartment. But that had to be a lot of ammo. The leopard has two compartments for ammo storage, 27 in a special magazine in the forwards section of the hull to the left of the driver, and 15 are stored in the turret separated by a door. The last compartment is designed specifically to direct the blast upwards in case of a cookoff. Away from the crew, with blow off panels in the roof.

I have been searching but can't find the pictures again (joys of a new PC) but the Houthi Rebels posted trophy shots of equipment the Saudis had abandoned on the field. One of the pictures was through the turret hatch of a (105mm?) Abrams. On the floor of the turret and up the sides were stacks of ammo boxes. That tank may have been carrying a hundred rounds or more, most in their original packing boxes.

Russian air strikes largely ignore jhadists and instead target the Syrian opposition and civilians

After ejecting, Filipov resisted capture and finally killed himself using a hand grenade. While widely praised as a “hero’s act,” supposedly undertaken with the aim of avoiding being beheaded by Jihadists, Filipov’s suicide was actually in vain. He came down inside an area controlled by Jaysh An Nasr, and would therefore have been captured by JAN and not by jihadists.

The Russian pilot would almost certainly have been exchanged via Turkey.
    Oops.

I guess Russian Air Force SERE training takes about 2 minutes in total.

    Step 1. Take grenade.
    Step 2. Pull pin.
Step 3. There is no Step 3.

You need to actually get captured and survive long enough to meet a grownup to realise your value to get exchanged.

I guess don doesn't know how many soldiers got beheaded in chechnya after or without rotting in a pit for months. There is zero chance to get exchanged for a russian even if you are a janitor at HQ.
