Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad

Dedicated server is no longer available due to the lack of interest from the FHC community in playing this game. Might revisit it later in the small offchance interest would rise again.

Game information from back when we where all eagerly anticipating the game:

      Spoiler:
I am very much looking forward to the release of this game. I've played the first game extensively, and although the graphics engine is very much showing its age by todays standards (RO1 was released back in early 2006 and have sold over 400K copies by now) the realistic simulation of bullet and projectile physics and damage models still makes the gameplay very attractive.

With the new graphics engine and even more emphasis on realism, this is going to be the game of the year for fans of games focusing around the events of this era.

    Introduction:
RO2 is a sequel to the acclaimed first person shooter Red Orchestra produced by Tripwire interactive. Set on the eastern front during world war two, the game is focused on bringing a realistic experience of squad based warfare with an emphasis on tactics. The game simulates realistic bullet/projectile ballistics and physics.

As the title pretty much gives away, the gameplay is focused around the epic battle of Stalingrad. A future expansion developed jointly in-house by Tripwire and the mod community, which previously worked on expanding RO1, is set to be released later after the initial release of HoS. This future RO2 expansion entitled “Rising Storm” will take players to the battlefields of the Pacific.

    Details about the gameplay:
RO multiplayer taken to new heights: Tripwire’s renowned MP already exceeds that of much of the competition – the new game will stretch that lead even further. With highly addictive and fun varieties of game-play online, the game will feature everything from quick, brutal firefights, through to more intricate and challenging simulation modes.

Persistent Stats Tracking and Player Progression: Persistence constantly gives the gamer something to strive for and keeps them playing. Grow in rank, earn medals, improve your abilities, and become a Hero – all visible to the complete online gaming community and embedded within the game.
Heroes: Obtain the ultimate goal and become a Hero online. Players with hero status inspire troops around them and cause fear in their enemies. Heroes have access to the best and rarest weapons and equipment, and will stand out visually from the rest of the soldiers.

Stalingrad Campaign: The Stalingrad campaign will feature the multiplayer maps used in a campaign layout recreating the battle for Stalingrad from both the German and Russian sides. This will be enhanced with story elements through the form of mission introductions and in-game cinematic sequences that begin and end the campaign.

Unique Focus – the Battle of Stalingrad in depth: takes the familiar WWII genre into a unique direction. Far removed from the well-trodden Normandy setting, gameplay is based on fresh scenarios and actions the player has never experienced before. Follow the German army as they assault the city of Stalingrad, to the banks of the Volga. Follow the Soviet army as it holds the city against all the odds then destroys the Axis forces.

First person cover system: Experience the ultimate firefights that a cover system allows, from the immersion of a first person view. Peek or blind fire over and around cover and more.

Squad Command: Command fire teams on the battlefield using an easy to use first person interface. Suppress the enemy, send a fire team to flank them and hit them where it hurts!

WWII weaponry redefined: true to life ballistics, bullet penetration, breathing, adjustable sights, free aim, weapon bracing, photo-real graphics and more, create WWII weaponry that has no equal.

Co-op: Players can connect with their friends and battle AI in multiple game types including the Stalingrad Campaign, Skirmish Mode, and more.

Offline Challenges – Online Achievements: Offline challenges such as the shooting range and assault courses let the player learn and hone their skills to perfection with all of the weapons and features in the game. Training with different challenges to achieve awards, win competitions and improve their skills the player can pit their best times/scores against the rest of the online gaming community.

Morale: Experience what it is like to be a soldier in one of the bloodiest conflicts in history and the importance of a soldier’s state of mind and how it can turn the tide of battle.

Exciting Offline Play: Offline play against AI featuring the Stalingrad Campaign, Skirmish mode, and more give the player an exciting and fun environment to learn the game before hopping online. Play any level or Campaign offline against AI to gain achievements and train for the online arena.

Competitions & Leader-boards: Compete to obtain unique awards and achievements with players all over the world. The competitions range from shooting range challenges to unique and fun assault courses.
Enhanced UnrealŪ Engine™ 3: Built on an enhanced version of Unreal Engine 3 the game features cutting edge visuals and features.

Played the shit out of Darkest Hour mod, I hope they took some of the things from that into this game and it will be awesome.

Re: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad

    Super looking forward to this.

However watching the 30 minute interview, there were a few things that irked me. When you won an objective and your team respawns, it seems that you go back to the spawnpoint even if you're alive. I think it would slow down your progress by forcing the player to go back, and have to run the distance you covered again.
Also there seemed to be a weird animation when the AI spawned, and I noticed the pathing at some points was pretty bad.

I hope the version he played was an alpha/beta tbh, those small things really ruin the immersion.

EDIT: Uploaded by markeedragon on Sep 28, 2010 <---- Didn't notice that.

Regardless, you can't argue with 32 vs 32 realism warfare based in Stalingrad. It's such an awesome combination.

The interviewer is awesome. Like he sees a computer game for the first time in his life. And he has no clue what Red Orchestra was before he started the interview.

Which classe are there? Sniper, Infantry, ........

    Awesome.

Anyway, game looks nice. Gonna buy.

: lolmarkeedragon : was the only video with a decent preview of the game + interview with the head developer on youtube. Feel free to link/embed any other decent videos if you find it

As far as I know the classes are going to be pretty much the same as in RO: Ostfront. Infantry, officer, machine gunner, Assault, Tank commander, Tank driver, sniper and engineer.

That was a quote from the interviewer showing his total lack of knowledge about the game and apparently games in general.

I always prefered Squad Leader for RO. Many people had no clue how to use the smoke and just tried to spam the freaking arties or whatever which made me rage.
    And PPSh-41 ftmfw.

fk yeah, loved playing RO1, loved mucking bout in tanks, needed some serious coordination between 3-5 people, especially in tanks like the stug, still remember yelling to the driver turn right a bit, no too much, tank 2 a clock ffffff Infantry was quite fun too.

this reminds me, need to get a new pc before this gets released.

Would kill to play even a little bit sooner, considering the amount of time I spent in Ostfront back when it was released.

If you preorder it at steam you should get access to the beta prerelease ... how much time before official launch, I am not sure about. I'll do some digging

edit: You have to preorder the Digital deluxe version on steam

Pre-Ordering the Digital Deluxe Edition is the only way to get into the larger scale beta. We've decided against a public beta mainly due to time constraints and not having the bandwidth to ramp up to a massive amount of servers in the short amount of time before release. We will do a free weekend some time soon after the release for those that want to try before they buy.
    and ...

For all those asking about when the beta access for pre-orders is going to start. It will happen before the release. That is all the info we're ready to give right now. Suffice it to say you'll get your hands on the game a lot sooner than everyone else
