The Epic Store is amazing, I've been able to save so much money by not buying their games.

Finally got around to configuring my Rift today. The little demo taking place in the van was neat, but Mission:ISS made me queasy. I'm looking forward to playing John Wick Chronicles, Archangel and H3VR.

Oh, and in case you're wondering: a quad-core i3 has absolutely no problems running VR, so no need for a high-end CPU.

Youre gonna be GPU limited in VR, not cpu limited.

    Well, I'm running a RX580 4GB, which seems adequate.

similar to a gtx 970 for vr right? adequate covers it. Probably explains the quesiness in the iss demo though as you won't be hitting 90fps consistently without micro stuttering. had similar issues myself in eve valkarie

Give a man a physics engine and idle (high fidelity VR) hands...

Occurs to me this thread probably belongs over in the Video Games General forum at this point. I don’t think we actually have a VR thread over there. Mods, is it possible to move threads?

    Edit: thanks mods!

Got the Rift S at work, we currently have five fixed stations and two portable kits that use the first Rift, so we wanted to know if the S was worth upgrading to. tl;dr it's more of a side-grade, the configuration steps and the lack of external sensors is very nice, the dial adjust headband is in theory much easier but in practice didn't quite fit my face properly, the new touch controllers are much easier to throw if you don't put the wrist straps on because the circular tracking halo sits on top of them instead of wrapping around the hand, and the non-headphone audio is a lot louder for people who aren't in the headset.

We also got a Quest, and for a complete stand-alone wireless experience it feels p. good. Being untethered really makes a world of difference when you're playing something like Superhot VR, and the performance at least in the titles I tried was near enough to the full blown headset that I think I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to get into VR and isn't fussed about having the absolute highest number of pixels.

The Quest is a nifty bit of hardware. More put out by the low 72hz refresh rate; the resolution seems fine (I’ve never been bothered by screen-door effect). Oh, and that whole “Mark Zuckerberg is watching you masturbate” problem.

Rift S seems like a downgrade to me. Worse audio, no physical IPD adjustment, and I don’t see the point of camera-based inside-out tracking for a desktop system. But Rift CV1 Constellation system didn’t scale well, and had high computational overhead, soooo...

The tracking on the S does do something much better, because when you go outside the boundaries of the play area it shows you your actual surroundings again. I've had plenty of people get so caught up in the VR experience that they basically ignored the glowing grid of the standard boundary system, but getting sent back into reality makes the boundary much more meaningful. But it depends on your use case, if you're using this at home then I agree there's not actually much benefit unless you routinely move your system around.

That has nothing to do with inside-out tracking, though; stereo passthrough is possible on any headset with stereo cameras if the devs bother to do the work. True, in an inside-out system you’re already doing the work to generate the pass-through environment, so it’s easier to enable.
